Senior Technical Team Leader


The Technical Team Leader will lead a team of approximately 6 Web Developers supporting and enhancing a unique Cloud application functioning as a data-gathering system in the agriculture space. This must be a very senior and deeply experienced Team Lead that must be equally strong as a very senior full-stack developer using Ruby on Rails.


This person will participate in high-level decision-making when it comes to architecture and product planning/road map and will contribute as a senior developer. As a developer, this person participates in all aspects of development including design, architecture, implementation, testing, bug fixing, and deployments, and is capable of working across our technology stack (including front-end, backend, UI/UX, database, APIs, and architecture).

Must-Have Skills:

Previous Experience:

  • At least 5-8 years of previous experience as a Technical Team Leader of software development teams leading cloud-based dev projects.
  • Previous contributions to sophisticated cloud architecture
  • Extensive (15 years +) of overall experience working in software development, with most of those years working with Ruby on Rails.
  • AWS
  • Extensive experience working as a full-stack developer, ideally with React or similar on the front end.
  • Python programming language experience
  • Extensive (10 years +) experience working with Ruby on Rails


Should have Experience with:

  • Testing: Integration Testing
  • HTML5, CSS, Javascript
  • PostgreSQL or similar
  • React or similar
  • Continuous Integration Tools • bash • git and github • JIRA • Confluence • Artifactory
  • Rabbit MQ
  • Google protobuf • MQTT • WebSockets


Nice-to-Have's

Concepts: familiarity with:

  • Automated testing with Rspec
  • Agile Infrastructure • AWS and Cloud Services • Docker • Kubernetes
  • Data Processing
  • IoT
  • API


General Duties:

  • Participate in the software build and release process using github, CircleCI, Docker, Kubernetes, artifactory.
  • Build and maintain highly reliable data processing modules.
  • Troubleshoots and provides timely solutions to production issues.
  • Solve complex technical issues with current product
  • Relies on experience and problem-solving capability to identify and address technical challenges and trade-offs within the system.
  • Monitor/investigate system and resource activity, error logs, and bug reports.
  • Write controller tests to ensure outbound messages are correctly formed and encoded using rspec.
  • Contribute to architecture and product road mapping
  • Write integration tests to exercise API endpoints and verify expected results using rspec/rswag.
  • Writes clean, maintainable code with accompanying tests.
  • Promotes and demonstrates continuous learning; shares knowledge with colleagues to improve the overall capabilities of the team.
  • Technical Team Leadership of a very good group of Cloud developers using Ruby on Rails.
  • Participates in all aspects of the agile development process including iteration planning, estimation, architecture, code, and design reviews.
  • Build and enhance tools to simulate hardware components with UA Expert and Python.
  • Design reliable and efficient databases and queries.

The client prefers a permanent, full-time person in the role but may consider a qualified consultant on a contract basis. This person can be based anywhere in North America.
