Job Description

Aurora Hydrogenis developing a novel hydrogen production technology with the potential to dramatically change the way hydrogen is used in everyday life. The technology uses efficient microwave energy to produce low-cost hydrogen and solid carbon from natural gas without using water or generating any CO2. Hydrogen production using Aurora's technology has the potential to reduce global CO2 emissions by over 900 million tonnes per year, and we’re looking for passionate people to join us on this journey.


Aurora Hydrogenhas an exciting opportunity for aSenior Materials Engineerto join the team out of the Fort Saskatchewan, AB office. This roleis responsible for ensuring that the materials and processes used are safe, efficient, and compliant with regulatory requirements. They work closely with other engineers, technicians, and stakeholders to optimize production processes and improve overall performance.


The Role:

  • Other duties as required to achieve Aurora Hydrogen technical milestones.
  • Quality Control and Assurance: Develop and implement quality control processes to ensure that materials meet required specifications and standards. Monitor materials and equipment for signs of wear and damage and implement maintenance and repair plans as needed.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and standards related to materials and equipment used in hydrogen production. Stay up to date on new regulations and requirements and develop plans to comply with any changes.
  • Process Design and Optimization: Work with process engineers to design and optimize hydrogen production processes to maximize efficiency and minimize costs. This may involve assessing materials, coatings, surface treatments, or a combination thereof to improve process performance.
  • Material Selection: Evaluate material properties and ensure that selected materials are compatible with Aurora’s process.
  • Team Leadership: Mentor a team of materials engineers and technicians and provide technical guidance and support to other teams within the organization. Foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.
  • Testing and Analysis: Conduct laboratory and field tests to evaluate the performance of materials and identify any issues that may impact production efficiency or safety. Analyze data and make recommendations for process improvements or material changes.

Who You Are:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in Alberta (APEGA)
  • Strength in planning, organizing and problem solving
  • Experience with materials (ceramics and refractory metals/alloys) selection for high temperature processes
  • Able to articulate technical concepts and other project information in a clear, concise way
  • 8+ years of related materials engineering experience including materials selection, design, testing and analysis
  • Experience in developing and implementing quality control processes to ensure that materials meet required standards
  • Graduate degree in engineering is preferred (MSc, MEng or PhD)
  • Experience in optimizing manufacturing processes to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure quality
  • Experience in mentoring and managing teams of junior engineers and technicians, and providing technical guidance and support to other departments and teams within the organization
  • Experience with high temperature corrosion mechanisms and mitigation
  • Time management skills and the ability to prioritizetasks based on risk, urgency, and effort
  • Undergraduate degree in Materials Engineering or a related field (such as Chemical or Metallurgical Engineering) from a recognized university or college
  • Possess a positive attitude, be highly self-motivated, energetic, passionate, and reliable
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to review vendor drawings and documents for compliance with project requirements
  • A problem-solver with a high-degree of flexibility, proven diplomacy, and a strong commitment to safety
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic environment, with conflicting priorities
  • Experience withRF/microwave technologies is an asset
  • Computer literacy, MS Office (Excel, Word & Outlook)
  • Experience in leading or contributing to projects involving selection of materials, and coordinating activities with other departments, vendors, and customers to ensure project success
