With this vision and framework in mind, our Natural Gas Division is seeking a Professional Engineer or Engineer-in-Training in our Materials Engineering team to help transform our Utility industry. You will have the opportunity to support a variety of pipeline and facility projects to build a more resilient, sustainable, and affordable natural gas pipeline system for the communities we serve.


Materials Engineering is part of the Field Engineering Services group with a focus to get the right materials into ATCO systems and ensure material reliability and safety. Materials is a group with a focus on providing support to other departments across ATCO including Engineering, Construction & Operations, Procurement, Inventory and Customer Service. There is much interaction and exposure to various working groups across ATCO and the industry, including building vendor relationships. Material failure analysis includes hands on investigation into root cause of failure and facilitation with suppliers. Material Evaluations includes qualification, testing, data assessment and report writing. Engineers in this group can become subject matter experts in both steel and PE systems and respond to technical inquiries.

Responsibilities:


  • Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, report writing, economic and engineering assessment skills.
  • Review and provide coaching, technical feedback, and validation on the work of other team members.
  • Excellent written, oral, presentation, interpersonal, relationship building skills.
  • Demonstrated broad depth of technical expertise on plastic and steel piping system used in Transmission and Distribution of Natural Gas.
  • Participate in technical industry committees.
  • Development and authentication of engineering specification.
  • Develop and improve technical company specifications or processes.
  • Mentor, review and provide feedback on the work of engineering co-op students and peers.
  • Investigate non-conforming materials in accordance with the Material Failure program and execution of these projects.
  • Complete Engineering Assessments.
  • Act as technical resource to provide support to various internal groups.
  • Evaluation of material in accordance with the Material Evaluation program and execution of these projects.
  • Complete technical engineering assessments related to materials used in Transmission and Distribution Natural Gas systems.
  • Respond to technical inquiries from various internal groups including Engineering, Construction, Operations, Procurement, and Inventory.


Qualifications:


  • Minimum of 5 years of engineering experience, preferably in the energy pipeline industry.
  • Highest level of integrity and ethics.
  • Knowledge of material properties, typical failure mechanisms and types of material testing is an asset.
  • Experience directly reviewing others work and providing technical feedback is an asset.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation with APEGA is preferred but not required.
  • Participation with related technical industry committees is an asset.
  • Background in pipeline and facility materials requirements in CSA Z662 and B137, at a minimum including plastic and steel pipeline and facility material specifications.
  • Energetic and enthusiastic.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly, both verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences (senior leadership, technical, and operational).
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Understanding of fusion processes, fusion procedures and plastic piping is an asset.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering in Chemical, Civil, Mechanical or Materials Engineering.
  • Thorough understanding and proven ability to apply and navigate the relevant codes, standards and regulations pertaining to pipeline materials and plastic joining and isolation procedures.
