Job Description

Emergency Medical Care Inc. (EMC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Medavie Health Services that manages and operates ground ambulance, air medical transport and medical communications operations in Nova Scotia through a performance-based contract with the provincial government's Emergency Health Services (EHS) division and the Department of Health and Wellness. EMC also operates TeleHealth 811 Mental Health and Addictions for Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island for the Department of Health.


EMC delivers a high-quality pre-hospital care program and Telehealth service to Nova Scotians every day. We achieve this through more than 1,400 employees, including highly-trained paramedics, nurses, medical communication officers, and support staff.

Reporting to the Director, Corporate Communications at Medavie and Executive Director, Finance, EMC, the day-to-day responsibilities of the Senior Manager, Communications and Stakeholder Relations are to support EMC’s operations in Nova Scotia.


The position entails, but is not limited to the following:


  • Responsible for the development of public relations strategies that are responsive to the emerging needs of key audiences including, but not limited to, the media, community partners, and stakeholders.
  • Provide leadership and expertise in the disciplines of media relations, community relations, employee communications, crisis management, change management, and public engagement.
  • Responsible for the strategic development and execution of internal and external communications programs that support the company’s business and strategic objectives. This includes overseeing the implementation and evaluation of external and internal communication initiatives to convey key messages, organizational positioning and strategic objectives to targeted audiences while playing an active role in informing and engaging employees and stakeholders to advance strategic initiatives, and to build, manage and protect EMC’s and Medavie’s reputation and culture.
  • Lead, coach and provide direction to a team of communications professionals.
  • Work collaboratively with the broader Medavie communications and marketing team to ensure coordinated and cohesive messaging while optimizing the effectiveness of the overall structure and resources including sharing and adopting best practices.
  • Lead initiatives to build employee engagement around brand and core/new program developments, and ensures that branding standards and guidelines are adhered to throughout the organization.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience:

  • Experience in the health care industry in a communications and public relations capacity is an asset
  • Post-secondary degree in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible related experience with demonstrated ability to lead a team of diverse communication practitioners in a complex organization


Knowledge & Skills:

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills; gifted with words and narrative
  • Savvy with social media, including overall management and engagement
  • Calm under pressure, a multi-tasker, obsessed with details and execution and thrives working on projects with multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Thorough understanding of communication processes, planning and evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability to develop creative and innovative solutions
  • Good working knowledge of the media and its functions; an understanding of the Nova Scotia media landscape and experience as a corporate spokesperson would be considered an asset
  • English is required, bilingual an asset

EMC falls under the Nova Scotia provincial protocol for mandatory COVID-19 Vaccination.
