Role
Our Toronto office is seeking a Senior Fire Safety Engineer to play an active role in the continued development of Arup’s fire safety engineering practice in the Canadian region and the Americas.
The role will include working closely with many of the world’s leading architects and building owners, developing code solutions, innovative performance-based design solutions and consulting on a wide range of commercial, government, institutional and transportation projects.
You will be working with a creative, innovative, and self-motivated team of fire & life safety consultants in Toronto, the Americas region and across other Arup regions. The successful candidate will complement our fire protection engineers by developing and leading the engineering services on our projects, managing their own projects, and being supported by the wider team as necessary.
The role will involve interactive and collaborative working with our engineers and multi-disciplinary colleagues. The projects will be diverse, exciting and range from conceptual fire strategy development through to handing over landmark projects in the built environment, both locally, and internationally. This is an opportunity to participate in creating a strong local team in Toronto, with increased exposure and more responsibility early in the role.
Responsibilities of this specific role will include, but not be limited to the following:
· Understand and be able to implement the principles of fire science on real projects via the engineering process (goals, objectives, assessment of hazards, design fire scenarios etc.).
· Have experience in code consulting with respect to the Canadian Building & Fire Codes and related NFPA standards.
· Have experience in developing performance-based strategies and/or code alternates, utilizing fire engineering, including experience in calculations and modeling of fire hazards.
· Be knowledgeable and / or have design skills in suppression and detection.
· Understand how to effectively present design approaches to code officials.
· Be responsible for project management of multiple projects to ensure successful delivery on time and budget.
· Work to develop client relationships, pursuing new business opportunities and have experience developing proposals.
· Contribute to our research and development activities.
· Have a working knowledge of relevant software, including Microsoft Office suite of software, FDS, Pyrosim, AutoCAD / Revit.
· The applicant must be fluent in both written and spoken English. French language skills are an asset.
Qualifications
· Qualified professionals will have a Bachelors or Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering or a related field, and a proven track record in the industry
· You will have a Canadian P.Eng. or be eligible for professional engineering designation in Canada.
· Have good communication skills essential for team-based working, excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment, and be highly motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges.
· Be able to manage multiple projects through project planning, resourcing, budgeting, monitoring and successful project delivery.
