Calling all big DREAMERS and pragmatic DOERS! Fairtrade Canada’s Marketing and Communications team is looking for the Lennon to our McCartney, the Ben to our Jerry, the cream to our coffee.

Your task in a sentence: Fearlessly create a vision for and lead on all things content and campaigns.

Who will thrive in this role: You love the idea of working with a small team to achieve great things. Passion is your middle name. Communicating is kind of what you do. You love to lead almost as much as you love to listen. Adaptability, flexibility and nimbleness are in your DNA. You’re unfazed by a busy schedule and know how to prioritize like a boss. You know how to speak to businesses, advocates, and consumer personas alike. You may be a dreamer but you know how to keep organized and thrive off efficiency. You are constantly seeking to learn and grow from those around you. You aren’t afraid to ask questions. “Consummate Juggler” should be on your resume because you are THAT comfortable with multi-tasking. You’re a time-management whiz and a natural self-starter. You have an eye for detail and a mind for thinking outside the box. Most importantly, you are hungry to dive into the very soul of Fairtrade.

What you will do: Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Communications, you will lead planning, managing, and executing on all things content and campaigns. You will be deeply embedded in the global Fairtrade system, finding inspiring stories of the farmers and workers we work for and stories that demonstrate our impact. You will lead the development and management of a riveting editorial calendar that engages our business, consumer and advocacy communities and keeps them coming back for more. You will be the creative vision behind all our campaigns, including our linchpin campaign Fairtrade Month, and will drive all their creative elements. You will be a content-creation powerhouse for long-form content, thought-leadership pieces, op-eds, and various communiqués. You will build and execute SEO content strategies for our web properties. You will drive a “reuse and recycle” content strategy, making sure we maximize all our content across all our channels. You will work with the Commercial Relations and Business Development teams to support communicating the impacts and benefits of Fairtrade to businesses. You will work with the Advocacy team to help communicate to our community of advocates and talk about our advocacy work. You will help guide our visual direction and develop our visual storytelling, even flexing your design muscles on occasion (Canva for the win!). You will act as our brand police, making sure that all external communications are aligned with our brand voice. You will help develop and manage our francophone voice, including creating dedicated French content and managing the relationship with our translators. You will work closely with external partners like agencies, graphic designers, web specialists, and copy writers to support with your day-to-day work.

What skills, and qualifications you need: Fully proficient in written and oral French and English. Minimum 3 years working in a mid-to senior marketing, communications, or PR role. Expertise in writing for various audiences including businesses and consumers. Experience overseeing the full editorial process, including ideation, content development, editing, quality control, optimization and publication. Experience working on consumer and/or business campaigns. Proficient in writing SEO content. Impeccable proofreading skills with a strong eye for detail. Excellent verbal and written skills. Strong time management and organizational skills. The ability to handle multiple projects at once. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, SharePoint, Adobe creative suite (indd, ai, photoshop, etc.), and Canva. Ability to travel to Ottawa and Montreal regularly through the year (costs covered by us, of course!).

Your team: Be ready to work with some seriously talented people! Your role will see you working with people across departments to both be supported and to support. Here is who you will most directly be working with in the Marketing and Communications department: You’ll work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to think big and strategize on communications, marketing and campaigns initiatives. You will work with the Data Manager to support on impact reporting and to get the latest impact data. You will work with the Communications and Marketing Coordinator to help support our business community and commercial team. You will work closely with a content creator to oversee social media and newsletter copy and visuals creation.

The organization you will work for: Fairtrade represents over 2 million farmers and workers in the Global South who have been historically marginalized, disadvantaged by colonialism and unfair systems of trade. The farmers and workers who grow some of our favourite items like chocolate, coffee, and bananas, often aren’t making enough to put food on the table or sustainably support their family…and that just isn’t fair. Add to that the fact that farmers and workers are at the forefront of the climate crisis, even though they contribute the least to climate change. That is why we are fighting for a fairer world, one where people and planet are respected and have an equal seat at the table. Fairtrade Canada is the Canadian chapter of the Fairtrade system, and we working to develop Fairtrade in the Canadian market. We support and challenges businesses and governments to do better and connect shoppers with the people who produce their goods.

Our Culture: We are a people-first kind of organization, and your health and wellness always come first. We are inclusive and diverse, and value every team member’s voice. We have a positive “can do” attitude and believe in creating opportunities for team members to grow. We are a fully remote team but actively invest time in building team synergy and cohesion. We are fueled by Fairtrade coffee and lots of heart!

Perks:

  • Travel opportunities. Free coffee and chocolate samples (joking but not joking!).
  • Full 100% employer paid benefits package, including dental, vision care, massage, and counselling.
  • 12 statutory paid holidays (yes, 3 more than the 9 official ones)
  • 12 paid days for personal leave (no questions asked; whether you feel unwell, you want to catch your niece’s school choir, you volunteer at the food bank or your dog had a vet appointment)
  • 35 hour work week with flexible working hours
  • Dedicated yearly professional development fund.
  • Possibility to work from abroad up to 6 weeks per year
  • 3 weeks’ vacation upon starting
  • Fully remote team with in-person teambuilding meetings every other month.
  • Paid office closure between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.

Salary Range: 60 000$ to 80 000$ as per our Compensation Policy, within Job Level 3. Salary level will be based upon experience and skills.

So, does Fairtrade Canada sound like home?
