Job Summary
This position is linked to research on the design, fabrication, testing and analysis of the performance of ultrasound transducers for medical ultrasound imaging. The incumbent is responsible for planning and advising
on the theoretical and engineering aspects of the research project on novel quantitative ultrasound imaging techniques invented at UBC.
Typical duties include providing solid background information on ultrasound transducers and engineering and theoretical expertise in the field of signal and image processing, justifying the research path, and supporting
analysis of experimental and simulated ultrasound data. This information must contain studies on ultrasound transmission and reception performance criteria and also engineering methods to optimize
these criteria to achieve the highest performance of the devices. Modelling and analysis will be performed in the optimization process. The collecting, processing and interpreting of the experimental ultrasound data
will be based on theory and used to verify the simulated model in software. The incumbent will also write software to process raw ultrasound data and create images. The incumbent will also advise peers on the optimal
electrical circuits to interface with ultrasound transducers using the developed model based on theory. The incumbent assists the work of one or two incumbents in lower level classifications, providing instruction
and guidance in the use of specialized techniques and equipment such as ultrasound test and measurements equipment in the lab and also numerical and analytical methods in modelling ultrasound devices
and circuits. Furthermore, the candidate will be leading the publication of results through journal and conference publications.
Organizational Status
The Institute for Computing, Information and Cognitive Systems (CICIS) is an interdisciplinary unit at the University of British Columbia Vancouver campus.
The position reports directly to Dr. Robert Rohling, Director of ICICS.
Work Performed
  • Builds a simulation model for performance of ultrasound transducers using numerical and analytical methods in simulation tools;
  • Provides theoretical expertise and background information for the project and conducts a research path;
  • Works with coop and graduate students to advise them on the theoretical aspect of the research and experimental work in the lab environment;
  • Provides advice and assistance to peers on ultrasound transducer design and performance;
  • Creates reports related to the research data and manuscripts for publication;
  • Collects, processes and interprets experimental data in a lab environment from variety of projects to verify simulation results and the developed model;
  • Employs developed model to optimize performance of ultrasound transducers;
Consequence of Error/Judgement
