Duties And Responsibilities


Reporting to the Director of Campus Health, the Residence Outreach Worker will provide support to students experiencing mental health issues and will develop and implement programming and activities promoting mental health and wellness. The incumbent, as part of a multidisciplinary team works particularly with the Ontario Tech University and Durham College student population in residence and will provide care and supportive intervention for these students. The incumbent will create and deliver workshops and group activities to promote resiliency and proactively engage students in residence as well as connecting students to the most appropriate resources on and off campus for mental health and wellness support.


Outreach


  • Provides mental health promotion to students through programming and working with work study students to develop resilience building activities related to decreasing stigma, enhancing self-esteem and mental health matters such as coping with depression, anxiety and panic, etc.
  • Available to educate about Mental Health and Wellness resources on and off campus in the event of crisis or a traumatic event on campus


Student Support


  • Provides supportive interventions and/or makes referrals upon assessment to outside agencies specific to client needs, i.e. Student Assistance Plan, Counsellor, Psychiatrist, Access and Support Centre and Ontario Tech University Student Life.
  • Assesses student’s mental health status and acts in accordance with policies, standards, and objectives of health centre and legislated standards.


Administrative


  • Maintain clients’ records in a confidential manner according to Ontario Tech University and Durham College policy and within the context of the professional services/relationship and relevant mental health legislation. Collects and submit statistics to Director and utilize information for workshop and activities development
  • Participate in/on sanctioned committees as Campus Health Centre Representative.


Qualifications


  • Familiarity with electronic medical record (EMR) documentation is an asset.
  • A superior demonstrated knowledge of health promotion, specific to mental health and substance abuse.
  • A working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act.
  • Proficient computer skills working with MS Word, Outlook and research on internet.
  • Working knowledge of Mental Health Act, and Registered Privacy/Confidentiality Act, Substitute Decision Act, Health Care Consent Act, Ontario Human Rights Act, and experience with Single-Session Therapy principles.
  • Must possess training in CPR, WHMIS, MHFA, ASIST, and Safetalk.
  • Strong organizational skills; display a high degree of judgment and analytical decision-making ability.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; sound oral and written communication skills, an excellent grasp of customer service.
  • A minimum of a three-year advanced diploma or degree in Health Science, Social Science, Addictions; plus registration with the appropriate regulatory body (ie. Colleges of Nurses of Ontario, Colleges of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers).
  • Sensitivity to the diversity of the student body and the ability to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary health team is essential.
  • A minimum three years clinical experience that must include crisis/trauma interventions.
