Job Summary


The Coping with Neurological Symptoms (CNS) Lab is looking for an enthusiastic new team member to join our team. The CNS Lab is led by Dr. Noah Silverberg, an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology (Clinical area). The Lab is interested in psychosocial determinants of health after brain injury.


The CNS Lab has research space at UBC’s Point Grey campus (Kenny Building) and in the affiliated Rehabilitation Research Program, which is located at GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre (4255 Laurel St, Vancouver), British Columbia’s tertiary rehabilitation hospital.


This position will involve the incumbent to work on different active projects within the lab, these will require in person work and some phone work.


Organizational Status


The Research Assistant (RA) will work with Principal Investigator Dr. Noah Silverberg’s research team on multiple grant funded studies in a variety of capacities. The RA will have the opportunity to engage in several key aspects of the studies described below.


The research studies will be run out of the Rehab Research Program at GF Strong Rehab Centre (4255 Laurel St). This position will require in person work and some phone work, which could be done remotely and will be determined once hired.


One study will require visiting hospital sites for chart reviews. Patient files will be accessed remotely (ex. Cerner) for hospital sites where this is equipped. Where this is not an option the incumbent will visit the Emergency Department and review physical charts for pre-identified potential participants patient files. The incumbent will report to the study Principal Investigator (PI) and the study coordinator, who provides administrative support for the study’s employees.


In another study, will be recruiting patients from outpatient concussion clinics in the Vancouver Coastal and Fraser Health Authorities. Some duties (telephone-based eligibility screening and assessments) can be done remotely, from one of the CNS Lab’s research facilities and/or from the PA’s home, if work conditions permit. Baseline assessments will be done out of the Rehabilitation Research Program at G.F. Strong and will require the RA to be onsite.


Work Performed


The RA will be responsible for:


  • Assist in recruiting participants from local concussion clinics.
  • Correspond with participants to schedule appointments.
  • Completing eligibility screens with potential participants via telephone.
  • Other related research assistant duties.
  • Assist with validating and cleaning of data.
  • Create and maintain online surveys and databases.
  • Administer standard questionnaires and structured interviews to measure participants symptoms and well-being by telephone and in person.
  • Data entry into data collection tool (REDcap) according to established protocols.
  • Accurate and complete chart reviews to identify potential participants on site or remotely.


Work performance will be monitored and supported through regular communication with the PI and study coordinator.


Consequence of Error/Judgement


The RA will be expected to be accurate and thorough in their data entry and respectful in their communication with participants. There is minimal consequence for error in this role.


Supervision Received


The RA may interact with the PI as needed and work submissions will be monitored by the study coordinator.


Supervision Given


Assistant Professor, Department of Psychology; Registered Psychologist.


Minimum Qualifications


High school graduation and a minimum one year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous experience in research is an asset.
  • Previous experience with statistical packages such as R or SPSS is an asset.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail with the ability to work quickly and accurately
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with a diversity of people in a calm, courteous, and effective manner.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and in a team environment.
  • High degree of motivation, enthusiasm and initiative.
  • Completion of the Tri-Council Policy Statement (TCPS 2) online tutorial. This will be completed at time of hire, if you do not currently have it.
  • Experience creating and maintaining databases.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Previous knowledge of the electronic medical records system at local hospitals (ex. Cerner) required.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint.
