The Opportunity


The Medical Laboratory Assistant will perform a wide range of duties including some or all of the following: blood and bodily specimen collection; source document maintenance, maintaining filing system for documents, internal/external communications, participant recruitment and follow-up, source data verification and data entry and providing study management assistance to study team as needed.


Responsibilities


  • Prepare source documentation forms
  • Clean and sterilize work area and equipment;
  • Advise research team of issues that may impact study milestones in a timely manner
  • Attend and participate in relevant study meetings and site initiation visits
  • Track and report on progress of studies
  • Perform venous and capillary blood collections; and other specimens as required;
  • Liaise with facilities and departments within the IWK to ensure the day-to-day operations of the Challenge Unit
  • Track inventory and order study supplies as needed
  • Use MEDITECH for order/entry and participant visits and admissions;
  • Assist research team with administrative study tasks as needed
  • Ensure participants are engaged and supported while staying in the Challenge Unit
  • Blood and bodily specimen processing
  • Verify the source documentation and complete electronic Case Report Forms (eCRF) data entry
  • Perform follow-up calls to study participants and/or families; liaise between study participants and/or families and research staff
  • Recruit, enroll, and consent study participants where applicable
  • Participate in Study Monitor visits as needed
  • Organize all study documents and file according to CCfV filing SO.


Hours of Work


Monday - Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM, 7.5 hours shift


Your Qualifications


  • 2+ years of relevant experience within a university, hospital, or comparable environment in a research setting
  • Understanding of research environment and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) is considered an asset
  • Willingness to apply, perform and learn computer functions required for the position.
  • Experience in a similar lab environment an asset
  • Completion of a certified Medical Lab Assistant course is required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Project) and Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Teams, and other virtual platforms
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques related to procurement of specimens and a sound knowledge of Phlebotomy required.
  • Experience with REB submissions, and research administration considered assets
  • Certification as an MLA with the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) is required**
  • MEDITECH experience an asset
  • Demonstrate a high level of time management and decision-making skills in setting priorities based on deadlines (both internal and external)
  • Able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally
  • Competency in other languages considered an asset
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance Center effectiveness
  • Demonstrated strong planning, organizational, analytical and communication skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to speak, listen and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques
  • Demonstrated tact, the ability to work with others and the ability to work as a member of a team.
  • Organization skills and planning, including developing a work schedule, monitoring progress towards goals, and tracking details, data, information, and activities
  • Experience in customer service
