Job Summary
The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant is to participate in research project activities in the area of community child health by conducting background research, assisting with research study design, and preparing grant applications for research projects including operating grants, scoping reviews and systematic literature reviews. Project-related responsibilities may include participating in designing research studies, developing protocols, project planning and management of literature and grey literature sources. Program-related research responsibilities will include coordination and execution of complex literature searches, overseeing database set-up and entry and consultation and development of analytical strategies related to background research. The Research Assistant will also assist in report writing and grant development as it relates to the literature evidencing support for such projects and working with existing databases such as bibliographic resources. The Research Assistant will provide direct research support to Drs. Hal Siden, Tim Oberlander, and Ian Pike in the development and conduct of activities related to their program of research. This will also include collaboration and consultation with key stakeholders including clinicians and other research partners in the Pediatric Palliative (PedPalASCNet) and B.C. Injury Research and Prevention Unit, and other agencies who are involved in the support and development of the community child health research initiative. Travel to research sites (e.g. UBC main campus) and to other universities to attend meetings and coordinate data collection may be required.
ORGANIZATIONAL STATUS
The Research Assistant will:
  • Interact and liaise with staff of the Child & Family Research Institute (CFRI), BC Injury Prevention and Research Unit (BCIRPU) researchers, external researchers, health care professionals and community members to facilitate collaboration on injury prevention research projects.
  • Report directly to the Principal Investigators, Drs Hal Siden,Tim Oberlander, and Ian Pike
WORK PERFORMED
  • Collaborate with researchers within BCIRPU, and from external organizations to develop and carry out research activities undertaken under the direction of the PI's.
  • Participate in preparing presentations for scientific, professional and community meetings
  • Draft the technical components for the applications for ethical review of research projects.
  • Designing scoping review and systematic studies as a component of larger grant applications
  • Participate in preparing research grant proposals and letters of intent as part of funding applications
  • Developing protocols in collaboration with principal investigators
  • Coordinate communication between project investigators and study collaborators, prepare agendas and coordinate team meetings.
  • Preparing dissemination materials (e.g., fact sheets, posters)
  • Conduct complex computerized literature searches and reviews as needed. Ensuring up to date references are maintained in a literature database.
  • Summarize analyses and results for research reports.
  • Provide assistance to the PI in administrative tasks as needed.
  • Ensuring quality of data collection and input, running error checks on data, and performing quality assurance auditing
  • Overseeing database set-up and entry and consultation and development of analytical strategies
  • In collaboration with the PI and other research study investigators, participate in the preparation of research reports and articles for publication.
  • Caretaking of grey literature and bibliographic databases for key stakeholders, including clinicians & researchers
CONSEQUENCE OF ERROR
The Researcher is required to conduct all research activities in an ethical manner suited to the activities of the University of British Columbia and to the professional organizations governing themselves and those governing the activities of the Principal Investigator and all other investigators. Any procedures or data recorded must be accurate and must accurately reflect the work performed. Strict confidentiality of all study participants must be adhered to. All activities involving participants are accountable to the PI, the Department Head, and the Researchers governing professional organization.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Drs. Hal Siden, Tim Oberlander, and Ian Pike will provide direction and will oversee performance and results of the projects with which the Researcher is involved. The Researcher will be expected to develop a work plan and timelines and exercise a considerable amount of judgement and initiative in duties. Flexible hours and some travel will be required.
SUPERVISION GIVEN
As the research team grows, the Researcher may train and supervise members of the research team, and provide assistance to support staff such as research interns, research assistants, researchers and data collectors as needed to ensure that the goals of various projects are met in a timely and efficient manner.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
Preferred Qualifications
  • University degree (Master's degree preferred) in a related filed including social science research, health promotion, public health or epidemiology, with coursework in research design, quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
  • Familiarity with SPSS data analysis packages and NVivo software.
  • Specific knowledge of RedCap, PubMed and Anstrackr software is important to manage data.
  • Understand the basic principles of conducting research.
  • Educational preparation specific to the field of injury prevention with an interdisciplinary perspective is preferred.
  • General knowledge of grant processes and organizational structures on site and at UBC.
  • Related experience in a research environment including a thorough understanding of research methodology using both quantitative and qualitative approaches, knowledge of epidemiology, health promotion and community health issues, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Medium to high degree of computer literacy including familiarity with word processing, telecommunications, and Internet resource use.
  • Experience with data analysis packages and database management.
  • Familiarity with using library databases and software including Zotero, EndNote, and Refworks.
