Job Description
Village Media, an expanding network of local news and information websites, is proud to participate in News Media Canada’s ‘Local Journalism Initiative’ program. This program supports local civic journalism covering the diverse needs of underserved communities.


We are looking for a talented and motivated journalist to fill a contract position with our BarrieToday team, covering the stories that matter to Essa, Springwater and Oro-Medonte Townships.


The successful candidate for this position:


  • Reports quickly, clearly and accurately and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Has a passion for, and interest in, covering municipal council and other civic institutions and issues
  • Is curious about municipal politics, budgets, taxes, road repairs and capital projects
  • Recognizes the importance of farming, tourism, aggregate, job creation and housing
  • Has a track record of success in cultivating sources and fostering community contacts and relationships
  • Wants to tell the many unseen stories happening in these communities


Our journalists:


  • Are compelled to find stories that matter and engage with our communities
  • Are not afraid to ask tough questions when required and are committed to watchdog journalism
  • Have exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Are committed to fairness, accuracy and transparency, and have impeccable ethics


Qualifications:


  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • A valid driver’s licence and reliable vehicle
  • Superior language, writing and editing skills, with a thorough knowledge of Canadian Press style standards
  • Strong photography and video skills
  • Degree or diploma in journalism, or related experience
