Job Description

We are currently searching for a Health & Safety Regional Manager to join our team. The Regional Health and Safety Manager is responsible for overseeing and implementing health and safety programs within a designated region (Ontario and Prairies). This role will play a critical role in ensuring the Emterra’s compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, developing and executing safety strategies, and fostering a culture of safety among employees and stakeholders. The role involves collaborating with various departments and site managers to identify and mitigate potential hazards, provide training, and implement best practices to maintain a safe and healthy work environment as well as overseeing, coaching, and guiding a small team of health and safety professionals.


Position Description


  • Active and visible collaboration with internal stakeholder such as Operations Leaders, Human Resources, and IT to create and maintain key metrics to support a safe work environment.
  • Effectively manage resources and applicable budgets.
  • Responsible for the management of Certificate of Recognition Program (COR).
  • Manage, coach, and guide a team of Health and Safety professionals.
  • Ensure front line managers have been provided the skill and tools to complete incident investigations and working closely with the front-line managers coach to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Act as a back up to the Health and Safety/Risk Director whenever required.
  • Working with various stakeholders enhance awareness and promote an actively caring safety culture.
  • Working with the OH&S team create and implement a strategic health and safety plan/program for all sites across Canada, including fleet, plant, and office environments.
  • Oversee and manage the health and safety data management system including trend analysis and reporting of safety performance to all levels of the organization.
  • Collect, analyse, and interpret health and safety data and metrics, to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Assist the Director of OH&S and Risk manage critical incidents as a Subject Matter Expert with internal and external stakeholders and governing bodies.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge in the field of Health and Safety with particular emphasis on emerging safety trends, methods and practices affecting our industry/operations.
  • Prepare reports as required.
  • Anticipate, identify, and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices through work site knowledge, employee interaction and work site inspections and prepare recommendations.


Skills And Qualifications


  • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite (particularly Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • In-depth knowledge of health and safety regulations, standards, and best practices.
  • Strong legislative expertise with respect to MOL and OHSA.
  • Proven experience (3-5 years) in a health and safety management role, preferably in a regional or multi-site capacity with at least 2 direct reports.
  • Proven track record in designing and delivering safety training; great presentation skills.
  • This role may expand to oversite of our British Columbia operations in the future.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities and the capacity to influence others in matters of health and safety and risk.
  • This position may be based out of Oakville site with frequent travel to our other Ontario sites and infrequent travel to Manitoba and Saskatchewan; flexibility to travel is a requirement for this position.
  • Experience with safety committees regarding auditing, training, and implementing best practices.
  • Waste/Recycling, Material Recycling, Fleet safety and compliance experience will act as an asset.
  • Relevant professional certifications (i.e., CSP, CIH, CRM) are considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees, internal and external stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
  • Relevant post-secondary education is required for this role. This could include a diploma or bachelor’s degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health and/or industrial engineering.
  • Experience working with management in both unionized and non-unionized environments.
  • Strong analytical skills with the proven ability to interpret data and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Certificate of Recognition (COR) Program auditor/implementation experience is an asset.
  • Experience in a relatable manufacturing, industrial or transportation fields is required.
