Superintendents are accountable for field operations from initial project planning to completion. The incumbent is responsible for the site management of the project and all project activities, including the supervision of self-performed and subcontracted construction work, and focuses on managing the execution of the work by utilizing and leveraging the team’s experience. This includes ensuring that the project is built on time, within budget, and according to company policies and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for managing, directing, and mentoring foremen and other field personnel, including junior Superintendents, and possesses comprehensive knowledge of the project management lifecycle and S-Curve. The incumbent actively searches for risk and opportunity and has the necessary experience to correctly recognize and escalate commercial issues.
As a Superintendent some key responsibilities include:
- Knowledge in water & wastewater processes
- Familiar in understanding and generating schedules, production rates etc (P6, Microsoft Project)
- Problem solver
- Knowledge in commissioning & testing procedures
Project Execution
- Assists with the planning and preparation of execution, inspection, testing and safe work plans.
- Manages team members, conduct performance reviews, performance management, disciplinary action, termination, back charges and or other appropriate actions.
- Reviews billable charges for materials and subcontractor requisitions and obtains appropriate approvals.
- Ensures that project site and company assets are secure and maintains a safe and respectful working environment at all times.
- Ensures project closeout is appropriately finalized to settle all financial obligations, demobilize all resources and transition the project to the client.
- Attends all Progress and Safety meetings with all subcontractor representatives and reviews and obtains agreement on upcoming work to be accomplished.
Project Planning
- Advises Project Manager and other personnel as required in changes to methods, materials, schedules and procedures.
- Obtains an understanding of the project specifications, the contract’s general conditions and confirms that all materials and work comply with the contract and quality specifications.
Project Financial
- Assists in the management of the project budget by controlling expenses, administering owner and subcontractor billings, identifying work not covered by subcontractor’s scope of work/budget.
- Assists in the review and update of progress, cost reports, schedules and forecasts to completion on a regular basis.
Preconstruction
- Assists with the review and coordination of the project safety plan.
- Participates and coordinates the details required in the development of construction strategies, project execution plan, schedule and estimate.
- Communicates consistently with subcontractors and staff what the expectations and direction is regarding schedules, construction methods, company policies and procedures, permits, safety/loss prevention, quality control, and other performance standards.
- Attends all pre-tender meetings.
- Reviews the submission and revisions of project drawings with subcontractors and other superintendents
HSEQ
- Take responsibility for their own health, safety, and environmental protection, workers, the general public, and visitors to the site(s).
- Assist, conduct, and coach worker(s) in Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs), Behavior Based Safety (BBS).
- Know and comply with client requirements, Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and all applicable government laws and regulations.
- Demonstrate HSE leadership at all times.
- Ensure Contractors and Subcontractors meet or exceed HSE MS requirements during execution of work.
- Hold direct reports accountable for HSE performance, and verify that subordinates are executing their responsibilities properly.
Quality
- Communicate the Project Specific Quality Plan to the project site team including Subcontractors;
- Responsible for the execution of the PSQP and implementation of all Quality activities on site;
- Monitor the performance of Quality by the Subcontractors;
- Be the authority to control the Quality performance on project site;
- Verify that the project site team is performing all required Quality activities and hold them accountable for their Quality performance.
Customer Focus
- Continuously scans and analyses the environment for potential risks or safety hazards
- Builds people and self by providing challenging assignments, achievable development plans and ongoing feedback.
- Builds effective relationships with customers, design team, subcontractors, suppliers, and stakeholders that reflect and support company core values and meets or exceeds the customer’s expectations.
- Understands the implications of decisions on the financial objectives of the project deliverable.
- Builds constructive and effective working relationship with both internal and external team members, direct reports.
- Manages the experience of customers to ensure positive relationships are established and maintained.
- Leadership
Qualifications/Experience:
- Journeyman Trade Certification, CET, or a related field is preferred.
- 3-6 years of experience in a supervisory capacity. Depending upon the project size, scope, and complexity the years of experience may vary.
- Wastewater Treatment Plant experience considered an asset
- Demonstrates proficiency using a computer and communication tools such as; email, internet, and Microsoft products.
- Exhibits commitment to quality and safety by evaluating project related processes and making necessary changes and meeting or exceeding internal and external customer expectations.
- Demonstrates proficiency using scheduling and project management software
- Be able to do precision work without close supervision
