Position Summary
This position is Hybrid Ottawa/or Halifax.
Thales is looking to hire an AJISS Hull Systems Technical Specialist / Life Cycle and Materiel Manager (LCMM) is responsible for engineering support and technical oversight of various hull systems and fittings on board the AOPS and JSS class ships. Accountable to the AJISS Engineering Services Manager and working directly with the AJISS Naval Architects and the rest of the AJISS Engineering and Supportability Team, this role will support various activities to establish and maintain the configuration and design intent of the ship’s hull systems and fittings and support any changes.
The successful candidate will leverage their existing knowledge and expertise in hull systems and equipment to become a subject matter expert and main point of contact for all technical matters associated with the systems assigned thereto.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The key functions and areas of responsibility for the Hull Systems Technical Specialist / LCMM include the following:
  • Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software;
  • Supporting software management activities including software changes.
  • Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers, Ship Staff and Thales Service Delivery to support the investigation and resolution of defects;
  • Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability, developing technical solutions and risk assessments;
  • Investigating and formulating plans to deal with equipment obsolescence and material compatibility issues, conducting alternate part assessments and recommendations;
  • Developing and reviewing technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, test and trials agendas, and engineering change documentation and drawings;
  • Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;
  • Providing technical advice to enable hull systems, fittings and deck equipment to be correctly operated or maintained;
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with hull and other marine systems, equipment and/or software issues, including failure analysis and solution recommendation;
  • Participate / conduct structural and damage surveys to assist in the development of repair specifications;
  • Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval;
  • Supporting and managing activities associated with the design and configuration control of ship’s hull and other marine systems and fittings including conducting functional and physical configuration audits, and deviations and waivers documentation and risk assessments;
  • Supporting Classification Society surveys and other certification approvals; and
Minimum Requirements
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written);
  • Familiar with electrical safety standards;
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years;
  • Post High School Technical Diploma, Canadian Red Seal or Military QL5 certification in an approved Marine Trade, including but not limited to Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, or Hydraulic Systems;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • Language: English (Essential).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience as a Life Cycle Materiel Manager with hull and/or other marine systems;
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets;
  • Demonstrated project management experience;
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Technical Specialist with hull and other marine systems;
  • Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset; and
  • Strong working knowledge in the maintenance, operation, design, troubleshooting and/or repair of a wide range of hull and marine systems, including mooring and anchoring systems, outfittings, marine coatings, lifesaving equipment, lifting appliances;
  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard;
Physical Demands
  • May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft
  • Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally travel to and work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
Regulatory Compliance Requirements:
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program
  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level
