Position Summary
This position is Hybrid Ottawa or Halifax.
Thales is looking for an Marine Auxiliary System Technical Specialist and Life Cycle Materiel Manager who is responsible for engineering support and technical oversight of various Marine Mechanical and Auxiliary Systems on board the AOPS and JSS class ships. Accountable to the AJISS Engineering Services Manager and working directly with the AJISS Mechanical Services Engineer and the rest of the AJISS Engineering and Supportability Team, this role will support various activities to establish and maintain the configuration and design intent of the marine auxiliary and other mechanical systems on the ships and manage any changes.
The successful candidate will leverage their existing knowledge and expertise in marine auxiliary and mechanical systems and equipment to become a subject matter expert and main point of contact for all technical matters associated with the systems assigned thereto.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The key functions and areas of responsibility for the Marine Auxiliary Systems Technical Specialist / LCMM include the following:
  • Supporting and managing activities associated with the design and configuration control of auxiliary and other mechanical systems including conducting functional and physical configuration audits, and deviations and waivers documentation and risk assessments; and
  • Investigating and formulating plans to deal with equipment obsolescence and material compatibility issues, conducting alternate part assessments and recommendations;
  • Liaise with OEMs, Service Providers, Ship Staff and Thales Service Delivery to support the investigation and resolution of defects;
  • Analyzing requirements associated with baseline changes to the ships configuration, equipment and software;
  • Preparing documented work scopes, suitable for the solicitation of quotations from external resources such as OEMs, manufacturers, suppliers, testing facilities or specialist service providers;
  • Providing technical advice to enable auxiliary and mechanical equipment and/or systems to be correctly operated or maintained;
  • Supporting software management changes and development of requirements documentation.
  • Developing and reviewing technical documentation including equipment specifications, installation and maintenance instructions, test and trials agendas, and engineering change documentation and drawings;
  • Providing technical support of deficiencies of equipment or capability, developing technical solutions and risk assessments;
  • Preparing Work Packages and cost estimates for customer approval;
  • Conducting technical investigations into problems associated with marine auxiliary and mechanical systems, equipment and/or software issues, including failure analysis and solution recommendation;
Minimum Requirements
  • Familiar with electrical safety standards;
  • Possess a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated technical professional work experience in the marine/offshore sector within the last 10 years;
  • Strong communication skills (oral and written);
  • Language: English (Essential).
  • Canadian Red Seal or Military QL5 certification in an approved Marine Trade, included but not limited to Marine Engineering, Plumbing/Black and Gray Water, HVAC, Hydraulic, Controls and/or Refrigeration Systems;
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office;
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated project management experience;
  • Previous experience with the Royal Canadian Navy or Canadian Coast Guard;
  • Minimum 10 years of experience as a Technical Specialist with marine auxiliary, mechanical and controls systems;
  • Strong working knowledge in the maintenance, operation, design and/or troubleshooting of a wide range of marine systems;
  • Previous experience as a Life Cycle Materiel Manager with marine auxiliary and mechanical systems;
  • Experience in delivering marine in-service support of operational assets;
  • Familiar with certification requirements including but not limited to Classification Society, SOLAS/IMO, IEEE, CSA, Naval Ship Code, and DND regulations is an asset; and
Physical Demands
  • Predominantly office work but will be required to occasionally travel to and work in dockyards and onboard Naval ships
  • May be required to undertake inspections on Naval ships which may involve involving bending and twisting, and working aloft
Regulatory Compliance Requirements:
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as you will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level
  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR
