Come join a motivated, service-oriented team of individuals whose daily goal is “advancing standards” in the industry through thoughtful government relations, advocacy and daily compliance support to portfolio management firms across Canada.
The Portfolio Management Association of Canada (PMAC)is a non-profit association that represents over 300 asset management firms, all fiduciaries, managing investments in the best interests of their clients.
Working with the General Counsel, the Association President, and other members of the team, you’ll manage member working groups to respond to public consultations and liaise with our advocacy committees to determine PMAC’s position on several pending regulatory changes and help determine priorities for compliance conferences and networking groups.
This position may be filled on a 0.8 FTE (4 days per week) or full-time basis.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory:
- Along with the General Counsel, monitor securities, tax, and pension regulation/legislation to determine impact on members and their clients.
Compliance Support:
- Provide staff support to various PMAC committees, including the Industry Regulation & Tax Committee, International Committee, Practices & Standards Committee and various working groups.
- Build relationships with law and accounting affiliate firms on issues impacting members; identifies potential future speakers on topics and key publications for sharing with members.
- Liaise with committee chairs to identify agenda priorities, speakers for meetings, coordinating agenda setting with Committee Chair, General Counsel and President.
- Communicate summaries of key regulatory issues to members via meetings, information sessions, seminars, monthly e-bulletins and emails.
- Act as an information resource to Chief Compliance Officers and in-house legal staff with member firms, providing updates on changes to regulation and compliance, as well as on industry best practices.
Advocacy/Government Relations:
- Solicit member input on key issues to determine PMAC position.
- Liaise with key contacts with Canadian securities regulators on current and pending regulatory changes impacting Association members.
- Coordinate and assist in the drafting of Association submissions to provincial regulators and government bodies.
Pension and Other Matters:
- Monitor key changes to pension and retirement savings regulation/legislation and determine appropriate Association response.
Other Association Matters:
- As member of PMAC team, support as needed events and communication activities as needed.
Experience and Skills
- Knowledge of current capital markets regulatory regime with the ability to research and learn new areas of law outside of primary expertise.
- Exceptional client service orientation.
- Strong team-player skills with the ability to adapt to changing team and member needs and priorities.
- A thought leader, with exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Prior experience in the Canadian investment industry with 5-10 years practicing law and/or relevant in-house position.
- A law degree from an accredited university.
