About The Faculty Of Medicine

Position Purpose:


Provides support as it relates to facilitating student-centered, self-directed learning in hands-on anatomy laboratories and in the medical program’s case-based learning (CBL) sessions. Supports medical (and other) students in the shift from foundational science to clinical knowledge and skills development with opportunities to demonstrate communication skills and model professional behaviors in small group learning environments. The position may also require administrative support in outreach activities and to other learner groups as determined by the Manager of Research and Program Support or the Academic Lead for the Division.


In this role, your responsibilities will include:


Academic Activities: Under the supervision of Faculty members, program directors and course directors in the laboratory, act as a small group facilitator in laboratory sessions, using best practices to promote active learning and ensuring students meet their learning objectives. Guide students through self-directed hands-on learning for various medical courses (and electives, as required) and answer questions that may come up during the sessions. May be responsible for administering and marking in-lab quizzes, as needed. Acts as a Facilitator by guiding students through various steps of case-based learning where students devise solutions to various medical cases. Monitors student attendance and reports absences and any concerns to the Undergraduate Medical Education Office. Assess student performance in CBL sessions as part of the final course grade.


Specimen handling: Prepare solutions and take care of wetting specimens. Assist with embalming as required. Ensures proper care and handling of specimens during workshops.


Academic Laboratory support: Liaise with the Leader of Practical Examinations or course directors in the preparation for exams and provide administrative support on exam days as required. This may include taking attendance, distributing, and collecting exams as well as some proctoring. May be required to support prosectors with administrative tasks that support educational activities in the laboratory, including printing documents, updating computers, and marking quizzes. May be required to provide administrative support in terms of managing learner access of anatomical specimens and ultrasound equipment.


Lab Maintenance: Clean the anatomy lab, morgue and embalming rooms and lifts. Responsible for cleaning and organizing supply cabinets and library. Collect both regular and chemical waste and bring to appropriate areas for disposal. Clean and organize dissection tools, trays and prepare lab buckets for washing. Assist in setting up and cleaning before and after laboratories. Prepare lab coats for laundry services.


Administrative Support: Assist Senior Prosectors as required with maintaining and updating procedure manual. Ensure that embalming and other administrative laboratory records are up to date. Ensure that the laundry, embalming, and specimen rooms are fully stocked. Cross reference inventory logs to make sure that refrigerator and chemicals supplies are accurate. Support Senior Prosectors in maintaining up-to-date catalogue of anatomical specimens. Help to ensure safety and security requirements are met in the laboratory. Report concerns and or injuries to Program Director, course directors, or Prosection Team. This may include assistance with completing health and safety documents. Provide back up and support to Body Donation Officer in various tasks as required. This can include preparing letters, packages, and other administrative duties. May be required to provide assistance with accepting donations on evenings and weekends. May be required to provide support in relation to communicating with funeral homes and donor families.


Outreach activities: May be called upon to provide support during various outreach activities as well as in-house initiatives such as Open Doors and Discovery Days


What you will bring:


Essential Qualifications


  • Graduate Degree in the biomedical sciences
  • Minimum of 3 years of teaching support with recent experience working in human cadaveric laboratories


Other Qualifications


  • Bilingualism – French and English (spoken and written)
  • Ability to be an active part of instructional and non-instructional activities.
  • Ability to function well in a team environment and be able to adhere to written standard operating procedures as well as follow verbal instructions.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift 30-80 lbs utilizing PPE equipment and lifts as appropriate.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and consider different approaches to meet learning outcomes.
  • Knowledge of the Anatomy Act of Ontario.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong detailed and comprehensive knowledge of human anatomy.
  • Must be comfortable in the presence of cadavers and working in a morgue-like setting as well as tolerate chemicals used to fix the bodies.
  • Strong understanding of Health & Safety protocols in order to prevent injuries.
