Industrial Designer Jobs

Purpose of the position

Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager, you will increase the ability of the Core Product group to deliver on the Plan of Record.

Responsibilities & Duties

• Conduct research to identify user needs, market trends, and new technologies
• Assist with the mechanical design and testing of new development projects and sustaining products to execute On Schedule, On Margin and On Quality.
• Conduct feasibility studies and prototyping to validate design concepts
• Create sketches, renderings, and 3D models to visualize designs
• Produce product documentation; including artwork, renderings, parts, assemblies, drawings, specifications, prototypes, etc.
• Develop and contribute to the SMART product portfolio and brand image
• Any other reasonable activity required by leadership

Education and work experience

• Degree in Industrial Design (or related field)
• A valid passport or no impediment to obtaining one
• Modeling and prototyping skills required
• Graphic design experience – product graphics, packaging, icons
• Experience using product lifecycle management tools (i.e. Oracle Agile)
• Experience in user-centered design and usability validation is an asset
• Experience and knowledge of mid to high volume mechanical part manufacturing processes and methods (i.e. injection moulding, extrusions, die casting, etc.)
• Experience using Adobe Illustrator software or similar
• 5+ years of Industrial Design Product Development experience with portfolio
• Experience using CAD design software and product data management tools (i.e. SolidWorks®, PDM)

Supervision

• Working in a team environment
• This position has no direct reports
• Smaller individual projects are also expected.
• Collaboration with other hardware engineers on large projects will be typical.

Working conditions

• Predominately in-office and lab environment
• Travel to China and other Asian countries. 5-10% travel is required
• Some travel to schools and businesses can be expected.
