What does SSi Canada do?
SSi designs, builds, and operates telecommunications networks in Canada’s North. SSi’s mission is to provide high-quality, high-capacity, and affordable broadband connectivity to remote or isolated First Nations communities.
Being the North’s premier broadband and mobile wireless technology company, SSi has been providing Internet service to over 50 remote and underserved communities across the NWT and Nunavut since 2005. Continuing its expansion, SSi is currently deploying and delivering mobile wireless broadband services across the Eeyou Istchee James Bay region of Québec.
What will you do?
Reporting to the Manager, Field Operations, the Field Operations Technician will be part of a group of passionate people who excel at solving complex technical challenges in remote sites located across Northern Quebec and Nunavut.
The Field Technician will be responsible for the hands-on day-to-day build, install, integration, repair, and maintenance of SSi mobile and satellite network.
The general duties include:
- Participate in activities associated with network optimization and build activities;
- Install, upgrade, test, troubleshoot, repair and maintain the network, including microwave radios, AC/DC power systems, cellular base stations (GSM, LTE, PtMP), some in-building DAS systems, Cisco switches, environmental systems (HVACs, FACs), fibre terminals, and multiport antenna systems;
- In coordination with the Manager, Field Operations plan and schedule preventive maintenance routines to ensure network standards of performance are met; and
- Effectively interface and collaborate with Network Operations Centre and Network Engineering teams to resolve network faults;
- Work independently and offer assistance if required to fellow technicians;
- Perform acceptance testing for new installations and maintenance acceptance of existing builds/networks;
- Adhere to Health & Safety policies and procedures.
What do you need?
- Ability to climb and work on ladders up to 50 ft. high and lift up to 70 lbs.
- Customer orientation to actively look for customer needs (current and future) and satisfy those needs.
- Diploma/Certificate in Electronics from a technical institute or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Valid G2 driver’s license or higher.
- Experience using test equipment including, spectrum analyzers, multi-meters, RF meters, VSWR/RL meters, fiber OTDR meters, and specialized cable termination tools;
- Availability to be on-call support and off-hours maintenance work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Availability to travel by air and by vehicle to remote sites.
- Very good analytical thinking to collect and understand information, and solve problems quickly.
- Time management and organization skills to successfully handle competing priorities.
- Knowledge of IP networking which includes IP addressing and basic routing.
- Strong understanding of AC and DC power systems and conversions.
- 3 years of experience working in telecommunications.
