The Opportunity


The City of Merritt is seeking an Exhibits Custodian to join our RCMP Support Services team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the efficient and secure management of RCMP exhibits in adherence to established policies, procedures, and regulations. This is an excellent opportunity for a detail-oriented individual looking to make a meaningful contribution to public safety in the beautiful Nicola Valley.


Responsibilities


  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Transfer drug exhibits, currency and all other items for analysis to the Forensic Lab and other locations as required and submitting Drug Disposition Seizure Report in accordance with policy
  • Ensure handling of seized property and exhibits is in accordance with the Detachment Exhibit Instructions dated 2020-04-30, E Division and National Policy and detachment standards
  • May be required to liaise between staff, RCMP members, the public, Crown Counsel, Court Registry, Health Canada and the Canadian Firearms Program
  • Provides support and coverage of other municipal positions as assigned
  • Transfer all exhibits from the TEL to the main exhibit locker (MEL) ensuring quality control requirements are met
  • Dispose or return exhibits as required, including currency to the Receiver General. Any exhibit destruction must done in the presence of another employee and they must sign off on the destruction
  • Assess all exhibits placed by members in the temporary exhibit locker (TEL) to determine that fundamental reporting details are completed and if any special handling instructions are given
  • This position has solid working knowledge of the Court Liaison Officer (CLO) position and may be assigned CLO duties as required
  • Submits relevant documentation to comply with current reporting conditions, completing necessary continuity pages and reports for Health Canada, tracking all exhibits via PRIME as per Detachment, E Division and National Policy
  • Maintains documentation for the TEL and MEL, including but not limited to a written log for the TEL and MEL, identifies clearance status of TELs, maintaining a white board and bulletin board in the TEL in accordance with detachment standards and directions
  • Package and facilitate the delivery of exhibits to various labs for analysis, ensuring all health and transport regulations are adhered to arrange for destruction of exhibits as per policy
  • Provides internal and external customer service in a friendly, cooperative manner
  • Prove safe and verify all firearm exhibits before entering into P.A.I.N (Public Agent Identification Number) registry and remove from P.A.I.N. as necessary
  • Ensure all exhibits are safely packaged and firearms are rendered inoperable when they are moved
  • Monitor all exhibit retention periods through diary dates and an “Exhibit Update Page” to ensure the accuracy of all exhibit files
  • Answers inquiries, responding to questions and concerns, triaging and escalating issues as appropriate
  • May be required to carry loads of supplies up to 60 lbs


Work is conducted in an RCMP Administrative Office, which can contribute to significant pressures and challenges. Employees may be exposed to disturbing content, biological and biohazard materials and graphic materials.


Requirements


  • Post secondary course work in Criminology or a related field supplemented by extensive working knowledge and experience in exhibit handling and court matters and solid working knowledge of support duties in a Police administrative environment
  • Knowledge of Access to Information and Privacy Act
  • Conflict resolution and/or nonviolent communication training or equivalent
  • A current valid Canadian Possession and Acquisition Firearms License (PAL) and the ability to retain it is a condition of employment
  • Excellent understanding of Federal, Provincial and Municipal Legislation as it applies to RCMP operations
  • Minimum 50 WPM Typing skills
  • Training and/or experience in the use of recognized police computer software which may include but is not limited to RMS, JUSTIN, CPIC, CJIM, and PAIN
  • Successful completion of a recognized Firearms Safety Training Course
  • Qualification under the British Columbia Police Act to receive appointment to Special Provincial Constable status
  • A current valid RCMP Reliability Security Clearance and the ability to retain it is a condition of employment
