Job Description
Position Overview
The Research Services Office invites applications for aEquity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Advisor. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.
Through implementation of our institutional Canada Research Chair (CRC) Equity Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan, as well as participation in the Dimensions EDI pilot program and our new Presidential Task Force on EDIA, we aim to implement best practices to sustain the participation in the research ecosystem of and address the underrepresentation of individuals from equity-deserving groups including, but not limited to: women, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, racialized persons, and members of LGBTQ2S+ communities. The EDI Advisor will contribute to this initiative by supporting development and implementation of support frameworks and guidance materials for faculties, units and researchers addressing funding agency requirements and strengthening equitable and inclusive practices in research design, practice and administration.
Working in the Research Services unit within the Vice-President Research Office, the EDI Advisor will provide expertise in support of strengthening EDIA related to research, including selection processes and support structures for research activities. This position will report to the Manager, EDI in Research in the Research Services Office (RSO), working closely with and across teams within RSO while coordinating activity with the Vice Provost and Associate Vice-President (Research) for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and personnel in the Office of EDI. They adopt a consultative approach in providing expert guidance and developing educational resources to support individual researchers and the broader research community in the integration of equity, diversity and inclusion in research design and research practice. This position will require strong organizational skills working across portfolios and coordinating tasks and timelines.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Prepare and deliver consultations to communicate EDIA processes across various levels of administration including senior leadership
  • Build upon and deliver guidance and training resources on such topics as unconscious bias, Gender Based Analysis (GBA+) and evidence-based strategies to effectively address barriers faced by equity-deserving groups in the research ecosystem.
  • Maintain in-depth understanding of EDIA requirements, in particular as it relates to the CRC and tri-council funding programs
  • Inform the need for new actions and track progress in sustaining a healthy and inclusive research environment for equity-deserving groups
  • Provide detailed review and guidance to researchers and teams in the development of effective EDIA action plans to meet funding competition requirements
  • Represent the Research Services Office EDIA team to relevant stakeholders including other units in Research Services, the Office of the Vice-President (Research), the Provost Office, faculties and various committees
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen EDI in research administration and practices
  • Support equitable and inclusive recruitment practices in consultation with the Offices of EDI and Human Resources
  • Research and develop strategic recommendations and supporting guidance materials related to EDI in research design and practice
  • Provide recommendations for the development of processes and frameworks to achieve and monitor EDI compliance and progress
  • Support implementation of the institutional CRC EDI action plan, including administrative processes to implement the EDI Action Plan
  • Gather data and further develop processes related to supporting EDI for CRC and other research programs as required
  • Develop, plan and facilitate workshops and training related to EDI in research
  • Support the implementation of organizational change to support adoption of best practices and program requirements
  • Advise on the broader development of EDIA practices and resources applicable across the campus research community
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Knowledge of EDIA, accessibility and human rights policies, federal/provincial legislation and best practices
  • Awareness of assessment and monitoring frameworks, and evaluation methods to measure effectiveness of EDIA approaches
  • Demonstrated track record of working effectively with and for members of equity-deserving groups (including women, racialized/visible minorities, Indigenous Peoples, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ2S+ community)
  • Ability to work independently, planning and prioritizing own work, in a team setting
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to convey EDIA priorities and build relationships in a variety of settings across diverse demographics of stakeholders
  • Demonstrated cultural sensitivity
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Minimum of three years related experience in the areas of facilitating EDIA initiatives and supporting postsecondary research
  • Bachelor's Degree required in an area of study related to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility; a combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated commitment, proactive efforts, and positive outcomes in implementing EDIA actions and strategies
  • Knowledge of federal research funding programs and research administration is an asset
