Environmental Educator/Biologist
Hours: 35 hours per week Full-time, 1-year contract with potential for renewal
Salary Range: Biologist 1/Educator: $37,164.40 to $41,689 Depending on experience
Start date: May 1st, 2023

The River Institute background The River Institute non-profit, charitable organization that undertakes research, education, and community outreach to protect and conserve the St. Lawrence River and other freshwater ecosystems. We offer a great team environment and energetic staff. In 2019, the River Institute was awarded the national award for excellence in science education programming by the Natural Sciences and Research Council of Canada.
We are presently seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to serve in the role of Environmental Educator/Biologist. The employee will work as part of the River Institute’s Education team and coordinate and deliver Environmental Education programs for the River Institute.
General duties: The main duties of the Environmental Educator/Biologist position will be to undertake planning, coordination and delivery of environmental education workshops, outreach events, camps and to provide support for environmental research and monitoring projects. The candidate is expected to develop and maintain a high level of knowledge about the science and natural history of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem, and further a personal understanding of its relationship to Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Knowledge.
Specific duties:
• Organize and deliver environmental education workshops, Jr. Scientist Camp, and outreach events in English and French,
• Develop and create new education materials including but not limited to lesson plans, workshops and social media posts,
• Assist with marketing and promotion of education workshops, • Assist with the preparation of funding proposals and requests,
• Train and advise co-op students and summer employees as needed,
• Perform field work, including equipment installation and assembly, sample collection, and field assessments,
• Implement good laboratory practices and handle hazardous chemicals following WHMIS guidelines,
• Maintain necessary paperwork for data collection and data entry,
• Develop and maintain detailed knowledge of organizational policies,
• Advise supervisor of situations requiring attention, and
• Perform other related duties as directed.
Qualifications and Expectations:
• University degree in biological, environmental science or education (science)
• Experience delivering education workshops and outreach events to diverse audiences.
• Strong communication and writing skills in English and French. Bilingualism (FR/EN) is a must.
• Ability to work efficiently as part of a team and to collaborate with other departments and organizations.
• Organization, adaptability, and creativity skills to lead various events and projects and to develop new educational content.
• Computer literacy skills, including knowledge of software for word processing, spreadsheets, Microsoft Teams, Canva, video editing and statistical analysis.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• A boating license is an asset.
• Biological identification skills are mandatory (e.g., fish, birds, trees, invertebrates, plants, etc.).
• The successful candidate will be expected to maintain First Aid and CPR certification and provide a Vulnerable Security Check.
Wage and Employment Conditions: This is a full-time contract position (35 hrs./week), with an anticipated start date of May 1st, 2023, $37,164.40 to $41,689 depending on experience.
