Job Description

- Licker Geospatial Consulting Ltd (LGeo) is currently seeking an Energy and Emissions Modeller / Analyst to join our growing team of GIS analysts and data science practitioners. We are seeking an individual with 2-4 years of experience who is passionate about climate change mitigation and adaptation.

As an Energy and Emissions Modelling Analyst, your main role will be to create, improve, and maintain data models related to energy use, emissions, and climate change impacts. You will work closely with our clients and our team to support data-driven decision making. An understanding of climate change policy, energy and emissions is highly desirable. You will leverage your expertise in Python and Excel to provide clear and concise decision support tools to stakeholders, and perform research to maintain a thorough understanding of industry trends, technological advancements, and policy changes.

As a GIS company our work is always spatial (and usually temporal),but GIS skills are not required for this position (though they are a bonus for sure). Rather we are seeking candidates who are able to think critically and able to derive inference and insight from disparate data streams. This will be a consulting position so we are looking for individuals who are able to effectively receive and transmit requirements and cogently report their findings and work with appropriate documentation. Technical proficiency is required (see below), and we are most interested in candidates who exhibit consulting attitudes namely:

  • Curiosity- We provide solutions and insight for an incredible array of clients. As such a healthy desire to acquire domain expertise beyond the immediate technical task is very welcome.
  • Enthusiasm- Data is cool! All employees of LGeo enjoy working with data and developing insight into the process that underpin our society. More to the point we are passionate about our work and enjoy producing fantastic results. Accordingly, we are looking for individuals with similar attitudes.
  • Confidence- As experts in our field, our clients expect us to be able to stand behind our deliverables with evidence of documented uncertainties as well as opportunities for improvement.
  • Discipline- Our business is predicated on our ability to deliver results on-time, on-budget and on-scope. Successful applicants should be able to demonstrate discipline in their work especially as it pertains to quality control and assurance.
  • Creativity- Nearly all projects we deliver require some measure of problem solving. Crucially we are looking for individuals who are able to research, develop and test alternate approaches to complex problems typically under a deadline.

Notwithstanding the personality traits above we do require some significant technical expertise including:

Technical Skills

  • Javascript (jquery, d3 bonus points for mapbox and ArcGIS API for Javascript)
  • Statistics proficiency- Comprehension of the statistical validity of our work is a crucial element in our project delivery. Therefore we are seeking candidates who have experience using statistics to establish models as well as to delineate confidence in outputs
  • SQL - basic or intermediate experience Data mastery - The data that we receive, explore, transform and analyze are not typically huge but they are often very complex and usually require a deep clean before being made functional for value-added work. Knowledge of data handling, sanitation and storage (as well as analysis) is critical for this role.
  • Excel!- While it's a python-based world for analysis, our clients prefer to receive information in a software format they know how to use and manipulate. Therefore, experience and ability using excel are preferred for this role
  • Python - Our primary programming language and environment. Applicants are expected to have significant demonstrated experience delivering solutions in a python-based environment. Additionally we expect applicants to be conversant with Pandas, numpy, matplotlib libraries (and bonus points for knowledge of arcpy).
  • Programming Proficiency
