Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is seeking a temporary, full-time (1.0 FTE) Research Analyst. The Building Science Centre of Excellence (BSCE) aims to establish a regional education and research capacity in Building Science and Building Engineering, advance the state of practice for the building construction industry, and become a recognized knowledge-based node in the global network of building science experts. The Research Analyst will assist with challenging strategic and industry-initiated research projects.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The successful applicant will support the experimental and numerical building science research projects the BSCE Director is leading. The successful applicant will be responsible for the daily operation of the Building Envelope Test Facility, the Building Science Material and Instrumentation Lab, the Whole Building Performance Research Lab, and an Environmental Chamber, and supports students teaching and research activities in the laboratories. Moreover, the successful candidate will contribute to numerical and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis, building performance optimization, and machine language application to building science. The successful applicant will assist the Director with the preparation of research publications, grant applications, and contract proposals. The successful applicant is expected to work in a colloquial manner with other BSCE research team members.


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Working knowledge of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) applied to building science problems as asset.
  • Experience with data acquisition systems including the setup, programming, and troubleshooting of data loggers and DAQ systems is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collegial manner within a team environment.
  • Strong Building Science knowledge.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems and propose efficient technical solutions an asset.
  • Experience in fabrication and instrumentation of building envelope test panels is desirable.
  • Diploma or Bachelor’s in Building Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with building performance optimization, building retrofit and net-zero energy building design.
  • Working knowledge of technical drawings and proficiency in AutoCAD software an asset.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Experience in the construction industry and carpenter skills would be an asset.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with temperature, relative humidity, airspeed, heat flux, and pressure measurements.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Working knowledge of Machine Learning applied to buildings as asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and self-directed.
  • A minimum of two years of relevant, current, and related research experience.
  • Experience in instrumentation including the design and customization of circuits and probes is an asset.
  • Experience in data analysis and technical report writing.
  • Experience working with machine shop tools and hand tools is required.
  • Experience in building energy modeling and hygrothermal simulation software.
