Do you understand dog behaviour, have excellent judgement, and enjoy working with the public?

If so, we want you on our Protective Services team! We are looking for a Dog Control Officer I to help educate the public and enforce the Responsible Dog Ownership Bylaw in the Central Okanagan Region.

As the successful candidate reporting to the Chief Bylaw Enforcement Officer, you will:

  • Ensure and maintain detailed, accurate and timely records subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPA) legislation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Support the Dog Control team including assisting the Dog Control Officer II and/or completing Pound Keeper duties.
  • Represent RDCO in disputed Bylaw Notices in Adjudication hearings and testify in civil court proceedings.
  • Follow RDCO procedures in the safe impound, loading and transportation of dogs.
  • Follow RDCO bylaws, policies, and procedures while investigating complaints and handling dogs, excluding major aggressive and/or dangerous dogs.
  • Promote public safety and provide education regarding the bylaw and investigation process.

To be successful in this role, you will have experience handling dogs, your Bylaw Enforcement & Investigative Skills 1 or equivalent, a valid BC Drivers License and your Dog First Aid Certificate. You enjoy working with dogs, have an excellent understanding of their behaviour and will use that knowledge to positively engage with them during handling. While working with the public, you will use sound judgment, be professional and maintain confidentiality. This position works independently and closely within a team to support public safety and provide a high level of customer service.

This full-time, continuous position works five days on and three days off and pays $31.97 per hour.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan offers a variety of perks from dental, health and vision benefits, paid vacation, pension plan, training and development, opportunities for advancement, work-life balance, on-site parking, and the opportunity to contribute and make a change within the community.
