Job Description
Who We Are

At Northland, we’re enablers of change, united by our journey to transform the energy sector into the foundation for a sustainable future.

Since our inception, we’ve been early movers in the energy industry, adopting new initiatives that pave the way for communities across the globe and helping forge their path towards a carbon-neutral landscape.

We’re a different kind of independent power producer. As developers, owners and operators who are at the forefront of the energy transition, we’re uniquely positioned to leave a lasting impact in the regions where we operate. We’ve expanded our business across Canada, the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia to become a global leader, all by bringing together industry experts to find solutions with an entrepreneurial mindset.

While our work powers communities across the globe, Northland is powered by our people.

What You’ll Do

As the Director, Energy Origination – Canada, you will ensure Northland realizes its new development project PPA revenue forecasts while also providing the support required to secure suitable post PPA revenue streams and de-risk merchant exposures which exist in the post PPA term of an operating project. Working alongside the Vice President of Energy Origination, you will take the lead for origination and negotiation of C&I offtake and long-term hedges across all our new projects and existing power plants in Canada (and other regions as required).

Key Responsibilities

  • Accountable for asset hedging strategies and execution plan for all new development assets.
  • Development lead for C&I contract origination and sign off related to market inputs to C&I off-take structures, financial hedging strategies and related merchant assumptions for new and existing development projects in Canada.
  • Work with Asset Management to ensure strategies are in place for replacement of long-term contracts on existing assets and subsequent implementation of these strategies.
  • Work with Northland's Regional Development Offices in Canada (and others as required) and the Vice President of Energy Origination, to ensure Northland's RDO's have adequate marketing support and C&I offtake support for both origination of new contracts and management of existing contract accounts.
  • Build relationships and collaborate with the operations and finance teams, particularly around middle and back-office matters.
  • Accountability for contract customer relationship management and negotiation of third-party marketing agreements for regional marketing/transaction support as required.

Who You Are

  • Strong communicator: You have exceptional oral and written communication skills and are able to articulate your message in a clear and concise manner.
  • Collaborative: You are a natural relationship builder and are comfortable working and engaging with a diverse group of internal and external stakeholders at all levels.
  • Diligent: You have solid attention to detail, and you follow up with others where needed to ensure outstanding information or projects are completed within the established deadlines.
  • Credible: You have proven negotiation skills that enable you to establish connections quickly.
  • Detail-oriented: You have demonstrated experience in being hands-on in projects to inform key project and business decisions.
  • Process-oriented: You are organized and thorough in providing structure to projects and experienced in connecting multiple stakeholders together with aligned interests.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Significant Power and Gas Sales contracting experience.
  • Good understanding of onshore renewables, including markets, policy and regulations, EPC processes, and general project technology.
  • 5+ years’ experience in North American wholesale electricity markets, particularly in Canada (Alberta & Ontario). Experience in the US northeast (NYISO, PJM, ISO NE) would also be beneficial.
  • Experience negotiating energy deals including bilateral electricity deals and electrical capacity tolling agreements.
  • Experience working in electricity capacity and energy deregulated environments with solid understanding of natural gas and electricity markets and regulatory issues.
  • Experience working across different geographies and an appreciation of a global mindset.
