The Firm is currently seeking a Conflicts Lawyer to join our Conflicts team. Working primarily from and with the Office of the General Counsel in the Canada Region, the Conflicts Lawyer will join the Canada Business Acceptance Team and will assist with potential conflict of interest issues firm wide while playing an integral role in the firm’s client-matter intake process.



What you’ll be doing


  • Facilitate resolution of potential conflicts of interest with lawyers and professionals firm wide.
  • Contribute to the department's 'know how' system.
  • Mentor and train junior members of the Conflicts team on all of the above.
  • Advise lawyers and professionals as to the firm’s rights and obligations under existing client engagement agreements
  • Other duties as assigned to fully meet the requirements of the position.
  • Assess conflicts compliance with relevant rules of professional conduct and the firm’s own conflicts policies.
  • Draft and review conflicts-related language for client engagement letters.
  • Upon request, communicate directly with firm clients and lateral candidates on conflicts issues
  • Develop search strategies, conduct, review and analyze conflict of interest reports with respect to new clients, new mandates, potential lateral hires and firm responses to RFPs.
  • Draft waivers and coordinate the implementation of ethical screens.
  • From time-to-time, develop and deliver training / Continuing Professional Development courses to firm lawyers
  • Become proficient working in the firm’s client-matter intake platform (Intapp Open)



Requirements


General

  • Bilingual (English and French) language skills considered an asset.
  • LLB or JD from a Canadian law school or equivalent. Foreign qualified lawyers are welcome to apply.
  • Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, preferably with a business law firm.



Technical skills

  • Experience in matter opening or management, and managing confidential information.
  • Experience with conflicts analysis strongly preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge and understanding of conflicts rules and related professional responsibility requirements across Canada.



Personal skills / attributes

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills; can clearly explain and present problems and issues to others and contribute to their resolution.
  • Methodical approach to work; takes an efficient and organized approach.
  • Strong technology orientation preferred. Previous experience with IntApp Open preferred but not required.
  • Be an ambassador for Dentons, being professional in outlook and attitude. Demonstrate commitment to privacy and ethical conduct.
  • Able to interact positively at all levels within the firm and a good team player.
  • Able to exercise tact and diplomacy in an organizational setting.
  • Able to deliver high quality work to tight deadlines.
