Job Summary
The GSS boasts a membership of over 10,000 graduate students at UBC. We advocate for graduate students' needs to the University administration/Faculties at UBC, local, provincial, and federal governments. The GSS team provides advocacy services to support individual graduate students who are experiencing academic or personal difficulties. The GSS also offers academic, professional development, social, and community service programs to its membership.The GSS operates and is the steward of the Thea Koerner House Graduate Student Centre (GSC).
The Communications, Marketing and IT Manager facilitates communication with graduate students at UBC Vancouver and the campus community. The incumbent handles all marketing affairs to achieve a consistent and engaging voice for the GSS, from communications strategy and website development to social media presence and creative design. This staff member also assists the GSS President in disseminating and distributing key information as the public face of the society.
Roles and Responsibilities
·Managing the development of innovative and strategic communications campaigns to support the society's mission, goals, values and objectives
·Producing well-written, accurate and engaging content for a variety of communications channels, such as the weekly newsletter, the websites, social media and press/news releases
·Designing and supervising the production of promotional materials and creative assets for a variety of marketing channels, such as website development, graphic design and video production
·Developing and improving brand identity as the brand champion for the Society, ensuring proper use of the GSS logo and consistent branding and styles
·Enhancing overall media relations for the GSS by identifying Public Relations opportunities, providing media training, outreach activities, and coordinating media interviews for GSS executives and councillors
·Supervising and hiring of marketing and IT staff
·Attending GSS council and assigned committee meetings, as required, in a non-voting capacity. These meetings will require flexibility in work schedule
·Acting as the system administrator and the first point of contact for IT support at the office, troubleshooting technical issues as they arise
·Overseeing maintenance and special projects related to system administration
·Engaging as the IT liaison for additional technical support with external suppliers
Reporting
·Provide bi-weekly reports to the General Manager on communication, with a focus on engagement
·Provide monthly reports to the Executive on GSS communication
·Provide a written report to the council at monthly council meetings
·Provide a year-end report on all the innovative GSS communications, including recommendations for improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Communications
- 3+ years' of experience in communications operations
- Experience posting and formatting content using a Content Management System (CMS)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
·Strong written and verbal communication skills
·Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
·Relevant five-year work experience or university degree in communications and marketing
·Experience with integrated marketing communications strategy preferred
·Development of marketing plans and strategies from conception to implementation
·Experience with graphic design and video production software, including Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro and After Effects
·Experience with managing and analyzing business accounts on social media platforms, dashboards and analytics tools, such as Hootsuite, Facebook Pages, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube
·Experience with web design and development, and in particular, WordPress, Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, PHP, and Cpanel
·Experience with press releases and media monitoring
·At least an aptitude for IT or an intermediate level of computer literacy
·Excellent team player and self-motivated learner
·Superb time management and project management skills
·Ability to work under pressure in a deadline-driven environment
