Job Description

Primary Purpose:

The High School College Counselors provide students with guidance and support in dealing with an array of issues including academics, college applications and guidance, scheduling, and career planning.


Responsibilities:

  • Assists HS administration in advanced program organization and planning.
  • Provides feedback and recommends appropriate action and solutions to individual student’s academic and educational needs and abilities.
  • Helping students create a plan to achieve academic, career and collegiate goals.
  • Remains universally accessible and makes an effort to know every student for whom they are responsible.
  • Collaborating with teachers, administrators, and parents to help students succeed.
  • Identifying issues that affect school performance, such as poor classroom attendance rates.
  • Provides individual student planning and responsive services to support students and their families regarding academic matters.
  • Teaching students and school staff about specific topics, such as bullying, drug abuse, and planning for college or careers after graduation.
  • Working with students to develop skills, such as organizational and time management abilities and effective study habits.
  • Maintaining records as required.
  • Consults facilitates and maintains communication with parents, teachers, administrators, and pertinent agents on specific student and parent academic and educational matters including academic modifications and/or accommodations.
  • Advises and counsels students regarding academic, scheduling, career and college planning.
  • Assists HS administration in scheduling and roster compilation. Adjusts student schedules according to needs and directives.
  • Supports and attends appropriate student activities and events.
  • Evaluating students’ abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning.
  • Assists students/parents in understanding school policies and procedures, and advised on suitable academic tracks.
  • Teaches College preparatory classes and provides college and career counseling to students through planned activities in small group or classroom settings to convey educational and important school information, and offers workshops/seminars for parents.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years of school or collegiate counseling or teaching experience
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of multiple counseling approaches
  • Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work if available
  • Empathy and sensitivity to others' needs
