Description
Scope of Position
Reporting to the Director, Applications & Banking Support, the BI Developer is a seasoned professional providing strategic, analytic and project support to Alterna Savings as relates to the Data Analytics program. This role will involve understanding the business requirements and working closely with all business lines to ensure the program is closely aligned with our evolving business needs. The advice given and decisions made will have a measurable impact on the profitability or effectiveness of the organization.
Major Responsibilities
  • Maintains technical documentation for all packages, descriptions of the data and data structures including data definitions, metadata, data models, and data flow diagrams
  • Provide support as required to ensure the availability and performance of developed reports and dashboards for users
  • Design and implement technology best practices, guidelines, and repeatable processes
  • Design, develop and maintain business intelligence and reporting solutions
  • Communicate with all levels of management regarding information needs.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment with the ability to interact effectively with other groups in the organization, both technical and non-technical, to ensure systems meet business demands.
  • Crafting and executing queries upon request for data and conduct analysis.
  • Develop ETL processes to effectively move data into data repositories
  • Establish and implement policies, procedures, and technologies to ensure operational best practices
  • Provide on call support and after hours support as required
  • Design and develop dashboards, reports, key performance indicators and metrics utilizing SSRS, Power BI and other front-end reporting tools.
  • Collaborate with business and IT teams to design databases, data marts, data lakes, and data warehouses to ensure stability, reliability, and performance
  • Ensure proper configuration management and change controls are implemented for your sphere of influence
  • Translate business requirements into technical specifications that will be used to implement the required reports and dashboards, created from potentially multiple data sources
  • Evaluate, maintain, and troubleshoot existing applications and databases. Address production support break-fix in timely manner, keeping IT management and business informed of status and resolutions.
  • Recommend schedule and perform software improvements and upgrades
Expectations/Outcomes
  • Recommendations for new approaches for continuous improvement at Alterna.
  • Development and execution of multiyear roadmap to ensure Alterna keeps abreast of changes in technology and business processes.
  • Ensure Alterna stakeholders will experience continuous uninterrupted access to the BI and ancillary services as per the agreed upon SLAs.

Qualifications
Education / Certifications / Experience
  • Proven experience as a BI Developer or Data Scientist
  • Experience with architecting, designing, implementing, managing, and supporting OLTP, OLAP or Warehouse Database Management Systems.
  • Background in data warehouse design (e.g., dimensional modeling) and data mining
  • Experience in the creation, development, and writing of technical and training procedures
  • Experience in gather business requirements from a BI perspective.
  • Minimum of two years of experience with Microsoft BI products. Including Power BI, Azure and MSSQL.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience with IBM Cognos
  • Minimum of five years of experience with Business Intelligence development and analytics and database technologies
  • University degree/diploma in a computer science or related field and equivalent working experience with business analysis/intelligence, and information technology related positions or assignments
Knowledge / Skills
  • Prior experience working with Financial and Operational data.
  • Ability to multitask and adapt to shifting/changing priorities.
  • Experience in Business Intelligence, Data Integration and Reports/Analytics
  • Knowledge and experience with database design principles, including SQL, and ability to troubleshoot data issues within a database.
  • Power BI, DAX, and security rules.
  • Some coding skills like VB, C#, JavaScript etc.
  • Strong understanding of data warehouse and business intelligence concepts and best practice methodologies.
  • Strong understanding of the Microsoft technology stack (Azure, SQL Server, Integration Services, Analysis Services, Tabular, Reporting Services, etc.)
  • Proven team player with a commitment to excellence and continuous improvement.
  • In-depth understanding of database management systems, online analytical processing (OLAP) and ETL (Extract, transform, load) framework
