What You Will Do


Let’s do this. Let’s change the world. In this vital role you will join the recently created Center for Research Acceleration by Digital Innovation (CRADI), Biologic Therapeutic Discovery, at our Research facility in Burnaby, BC, Canada.


We are looking for a highly motivated scientist to join the CRADI-Molecular Analytics team. The successful candidate will work with cross functional teams to thoroughly characterize both reagent and therapeutic protein candidates using various analytical techniques to support Amgen’s early phase discovery programs.


Job Duties:


The successful candidate will work in a highly integrated and collaborative team environment and contribute independently to diverse functions depending upon project needs and priority.


  • Perform intact and sub-unit protein mass analysis to confirm protein identity supporting a variety of large molecule reagents and candidates.
  • Mass spectrometry (MS)
  • Participate in the design, development, and implementation of novel methods for large molecule characterization by RP-LC-MS
  • Qualify LC-MS methods for native, intact, and peptide mapping workflows
  • Qualify different chromatographic methods (e.g Size exclusion, hydrophobic interactions, ion exchange) to characterize proteins and protein complexes and transfer methods to other systems/groups
  • Train protein biochemistry staff on wet lab procedures and operation of the open access MS and assist with mass spectrometry data interpretation where necessary.
  • Liquid chromatography.
  • Implement and qualify automated data analysis pipelines.
  • Maintain and oversee a walk-up protein mass spectrometer system (Open access TOF-MS system) and standalone UPLC systems.

What We Expect Of You

Basic Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline and 5 years of scientific laboratory experience. OR
  • Master’s Degree in a closely related scientific discipline and 2+ years of laboratory experience


Preferred Experience:


  • Training in analytical chemistry/biochemistry, including proficiency in operation of QTOF mass spectrometers and UHPLC instrumentation with 2-5 years general laboratory experience. Prior experience in operation of MS in walk-up environments is highly desired.
  • Experience with native-MS workflows preferred.
  • Must work well in a team environment and be capable of multi-tasking with flexibility.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with handling and analysis of large datasets is an asset
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint; experience with electronic notebooks.
  • Ability to follow established laboratory protocols and adhere to data standards; attention to detail and careful execution of laboratory tasks are essential to our team.
  • 2+ years of hands-on experience in protein analytics. Experience with characterization of membrane and heavily glycosylated proteins is preferred.
  • Familiarity with common LC-MS data acquisition and analysis software such as MassHunter, Byos, Proteome Discoverer, MASCOT, Chromeleon, Skyline etc. is desired)
