Job Description
The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. Reporting to the Manager, External Compliance Monitoring – ISO Rules and Load Settlement, we are looking for an Analyst, External Compliance Monitoring – ISO Rules to join our collaborative team. You will be responsible for monitoring and analyzing the compliance of market participants with ISO rules and Ancillary Service commitments, in accordance with the corresponding Compliance Monitoring Programs (CMP).


You will also be responsible for a variety of compliance monitoring related activities:


  • Conduct and enhance CMP through technology and process improvements;
  • Partner with internal subject matter experts to ensure ISO rules are appropriately monitored; and represent Compliance Monitoring in discussions and workgroups regarding ISO rule development, ISO rule application and market participant behavior; and
  • Utilize and assist in the development of data tools and monitoring techniques to enact the CMP.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:


Monitoring:


  • Develop, maintain and refine and/or effectively utilize compliance monitoring tools (e.g., SQL queries, Excel/vb workbooks, PowerBI reports); and
  • Carry out timely and relevant research and analysis and document preparation with support from the team in response to ad hoc requests;
  • Lead specific compliance monitoring related projects, as assigned.
  • Perform monitoring and analysis with respect to ISO rules;
  • Develop or refine new or existing CMPs, including preparation of supporting documentation, and execution of internal and external awareness;
  • Work with the team members to ensure efficient, thorough, accurate and complete analysis as well as the creation letters and documentation;


Internal/External Stakeholder Interactions:
  • Develop and foster constructive cross-functional relationships with:
  • Participate in internal and external working groups;
  • Independently identify and address opportunities to raise the profile and understanding of the AESO’s compliance monitoring function within the AESO and externally; and
  • Support Compliance Monitoring through participation in ISO rule and policy development.
  • AESO teams through the reciprocal sharing of subject matter knowledge;
  • Market participants through interactions regarding various compliance monitoring processes (including information requests, complaints, referrals, deliverance of compliance presentations),
  • The Market Surveillance Administrator through the execution of the CMP,


What you’ll bring to us:


  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in Business, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering or other relevant discipline.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to exercise judgment including the ability to work with large amounts of complex data, advanced software applications and execute basic software application queries;
  • Demonstrated and extensive working knowledge and understanding of ISO rules, and governing legislation;
  • Strong written and oral communication skills while; including anticipating the needs of business partners and external stakeholders when presenting information and effectively communicating complex concepts for a non-technical audience;
  • Minimum of five or more years relevant experience in the electricity industry in areas such as: compliance, regulatory, markets, operations, commercial, or data analytics;
  • Experience programming, data modeling, and data visualization, including experience with Power BI, SQL, or Python is considered an asset;
