About The Position


Lethbridge College’s Centre for Teaching, Learning and Innovation ( CTLI ) is looking for an Academic Strategist to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the Learning Experience Design/Educational Development Manager, this role contributes to a vast learning support network within the CTLI and other student-centred support services by supporting students with the development of foundational academic strategies and supporting faculty through the creation and delivery of tools and learning activities.

The Academic Strategist works collaboratively across student supports and faculty supports.


  • Collaborate with CTLI team members, faculty, and Student Affairs to enhance learning experiences through projects and professional development sessions
  • Act as an integrated support within courses to deliver workshops, presentations, coaching on learning strategies, and mentoring students
  • Direct student face-to-face learning appointments (online or in person) that reinforce foundational skills and content
  • Support the development of student core competencies


Excelling in self-directed situations and having the creative confidence to forge new solutions to systems challenges are keys to succeeding in this position. This role also requires strong project management, decision-making, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills and the use of flexible approaches to adapt to our clients’ needs and comfort levels.

Direct Student Support


Specific Activities May Include


Direct face-to-face learning appointments (online or in person) that focus on reinforcing and clarifying foundational academic skills or content. Requested by students at varied levels and from diverse subject areas throughout Lethbridge College.


  • Coaching on effective academic learning strategies and study practices;
  • Supporting the development of student core competencies
  • Reinforcing and clarifying foundational academic skills or content in writing
  • Mentoring at-risk students;
  • Coaching on the effective incorporation of technologies to support learning activities;


Collaboration with CTLI team members and Student Affairs Professionals


  • Completing miscellaneous duties as assigned to support departmental operations, activities, and initiatives.
  • Developing and delivering a variety of workshops, class presentations, and/or professional development sessions (for students, faculty, and staff) related to academic strategies; learning technologies; Universal Design for Learning ( UDL ); foundational academic skills; student core competencies; and varied other topics.
  • Collaborative projects and activities with other college areas (e.g. Early Alert, motivation coaching, embedded supports project, Thriving in Action, Long Night Against Procrastination/Procrastination Awareness Week)
  • Staying abreast of new learning technologies to inform strategy work and technology referrals or recommendations for students.
  • Identifying and/or developing learning resources for online or intradepartmental use


Leadership
  • Contribute to and/or lead collaborative projects and activities with other Lethbridge college areas (e.g. International Student Services, Indigenous Student Services, LCSA , Kodiaks Athletics, Student Affairs, etc.)
  • Some examples include, but are not limited to: Early Alert, motivation coaching, Integrated Supports Project, Thriving in Action, Long Night Against Procrastination/Procrastination Awareness Week, Kodiaks Academic Support Team ( KAST ), Peer Mentorship, etc.
  • Actively developing and sharing expertise through professional development activities and participation in meetings and committees as required. This may include joining campus meetings, projects, and initiatives, and promoting awareness and adoption of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion ( EDI ) & Universal Design for Learning ( UDL ) principles and practices across campus.


Indigenization and decolonization


  • Collaborates across internal and external boundaries to meet common objectives, improve outcomes, and support the Niitsitapi Strategy


Required Qualifications


  • Develop and deliver creative, informative presentations to meet the learning needs of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experiments with new approaches, leverages setbacks, and makes realistic assessments of risks and next steps.
  • Strong organizational and self-management skills, including the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and attend to detail.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for researching and incorporating emerging learning technologies in support of student strategy development.
  • Approaches new tasks with a growth mindset and a willingness to learn from others.
  • Well-developed listening, probing and analytical skills, combined with the knowledge and experience necessary to determine appropriate strategies and relevant learning technologies.
  • Creative and critical thinking skills when working with students with unique learning challenges or disabilities. Must identify strategies and incorporate technologies to capitalize on students’ strengths and overcome academic weaknesses. May have to alter or develop personalized strategies and/or resources as needed.
  • Demonstrated time management, communication (oral and written), and project management skills, and the ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Effective communication, interpersonal, organizational, and technical skills in order to participate effectively in a dynamic team environment.
  • Shifts easily between two or more activities or sources of information; work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Evidence of professional development throughout career.
  • An undergraduate degree in Education, Special Education, Adult Education, and/or a discipline related to a specific skill/content area (e.g., writing, English).


Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge of effective academic strategies and their application in a post-secondary setting is preferred. Familiarity with the impacts of specific learning disorders is an asset.
  • Teaching/tutorial experience working with adult learners from a variety of cultural or learning backgrounds is an asset.
  • Experience and/or education on the topic of competency-based education and assessment is an asset.


Salary AUPE Class Level 11 Step 1 $30.78/hour
