Job Description
Please note this is a fixed term post for 2 years. Where a post only has temporary funding and an existing member of NHS Lanarkshire staff wishes to apply, this will be treated as a Secondment. The employee MUST already have written agreement from their line manager to be released on a Secondment before applying for the post.


JOB PURPOSE


As the post holder, you will deliver expert health and safety advice, meeting the needs of the NHS and other customers. In particular, providing advice and assistance to senior management, including Senior and line management and NHS Lanarkshire staff. You will deal with the development, implementation and delivery of health and safety training resources as required. Promoting partnerships to improve the provision of, and quality of occupational health and safety. Liaising with other professionals to establish Risk Management Techniques as an approach to Health and Safety within NHS Lanarkshire and other organisations, as required.


Knowledge, Training And/Or Experience Required To Do The Job


Chartered Membership in the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) is mandatory. This ensures that the post holder is a “competent person” as required by legislation. Chartered membership of IOSH represents a tangible and readily understood standard of excellence in Occupational Health & Safety. The chartered status marks out the post holder as a safety professional and indicates a commitment to continued professional development.


Qualified for National Examination Board of Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH) diploma or equivalent.


Or the equivalent of a suitable Professional Qualification in Occupational Safety and Health e.g. Degree/BSc in Occupational Safety or Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at Level 10 or NVQ Level 5 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Practice.


Other accredited course related to occupational health and safety that has been formally accepted by IOSH as satisfying the academic requirements for progressing to Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) e.g. Postgraduate Certificate in a Safety-related qualification.


Experience of practical work experience in a health and safety-related post.


Participate in the IOSH Continuous Professional Development Programme to retain Competent Person Status.


The postholder shall be expected to undertake training to become a qualified trainer in Conflict Management & De-escalation skills, accredited to a minimum of City & Guilds Level 2. The post holder in order to maintain registration with Maybo must deliver a minimum of 8 training days annually.


The postholder must remain up to date in all aspects of Health and Safety legislation, approved codes of practice and best practices.


The post holder must ensure that they gain an extensive knowledge of NHSL policies and be capable of imparting this knowledge to managers and staff at all levels, within the organisation.


The postholder must be self-motivated, mature and articulate; possessing well-developed written and oral communication skills, along with diplomacy and tact. These qualities should be supported by the assertiveness that is required to achieve objectives. It is essential that the postholder possess the influencing skills necessary to ensure the change in attitudes and behaviours that may be required amongst managers and staff.


A full and valid driving license is an essential part of pre and continuing employment.


Willingness to work flexible hours as and when required.


Travel throughout the United Kingdom including overnight stays away from home for prolonged periods e.g. a full business week on an occasional and/or frequent basis.


Resolving organisational issues in relation to interpretation and compliance with relevant legislation, in an organisation, is very complex, and where interpretation and implications are routinely analysed.


Formulating long-term, strategic plans, which may involve uncertainty and which will impact the whole organisation.


Planning, and organising area-wide health and safety strategy, policy and service.


Development of professional staff, training and planning organisational audit.
