Environmental and Lab Research Assistant Student Jobs

Will be responsible for a number of duties to assist in overall functioning of the lab and graduate student research projects.

Will be responsible for reconciling accounts and maintenance of lab financial records.

Will be responsible for the receipt, processing, storage and inventory of clinical samples.

Will assist, where required, with the approach and consenting of individuals (patients and healthy donors) to research studies.

Reports directly to faculty member, where needed, for experiments and for organizational tasks.

Proven work experience as a Research Assistant or similar role

Knowledge of research methods, in particular literature review methods

Liaise with the health librarian and project team to develop the search strategy

Participate in the identification and selection of publications, data extraction and data synthesis

Write reports to summarize data and the implications of the results

Respond to emails relating to the project

PhD in Chemical Engineering or equivalent relevant experience.

The candidate works well with others and has strong communication skills, including strong writing, research, and interpersonal skills.

Writes reports, presents research results at laboratory meetings and assists with the writing of grant applications.

Familiar with lab-scale fluid mechanics experiments and ability to operate small fluid loops.

Measure pressure and control flow rates.

Troubleshoot and ability to do small repairs in laboratory equipment and provide input into the design of laboratory equipment.

Excellent interpersonal, time management, problem solving and organizational skills

Experience conducting literature reviews and ability to understand and synthesize results from quantitative and qualitative data sources

Excellent working knowledge of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and REDCap

Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Conducts field sampling of soils, crops and amendment;

Prepares and analyses soil, crop and amendment samples for chemical and physical properties using colormetric and mid-infrared spectroscopy methods;

Analyzes data and enters data into FT-IR database

Performs other duties when necessary.

Undergraduate degree or diploma in agroecology or an agriculture related subject or Masters of Science is preferred.

Lab experience in microbiology, and ideally cyanobacterial culture

Experience with molecular biology, including nucleic acid extraction and PCR

Organizational skills, including keeping detailed protocols and lab notebooks

Design and carry out experiments to determine the effects of heterotrophic bacteria on colony formation in the cyanobacterium Microcystis.

Conduct culture bacteria and cyanobacteria

Identify ideal culture conditions, measure growth and colony size using a plate reader, and extract DNA and RNA for sequencing.

Carries out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification.

Extensive experience in basic molecular biology techniques such as RNA and Protein isolation, western blot analysis, qPCR, and ELISA.

Experience in histological preparation of frozen sections, immunostaining, and microscopy and imaging-based quantification.

Communicate with and consent new study participants

Experience in data collection, study coordination and/or project management

Strong coding abilities in a major statistical package (e.g. R, STATA, SAS).

Good communication skills (oral and written).

Previous experience as a Research Assistant (2 years or more)

Master’s or PhD in Epidemiology, Public Health, Biostatistics, Environmental Health or equivalent.
