Job Summary
The Youth Research Assistant (YRA) will play a central role in the development and implementation of a youth outreach strategy, participant data collection, analysis and knowledge translation activities for the Storytelling about Access and Reproductive Options with Youth Research Project. This 4-year, federally funded project works with youth, service providers, and health decision makers to explore youth experiences accessing contraception across Canada. The project aims to translate participant stories into actionable knowledge translation products that contribute to improved access to contraception for youth.
The YRA position requires a high level of strategic thinking and experience with youth outreach and stakeholder engagement.
Organizational Status
The YRA will report directly to the Nominated Principal Investigator, Dr. Sarah Munro, and the Research Manager. They will be paired with a trainee in Dr. Munro’s lab to receive and provide peer mentorship.
Work Performed
The YRA will work with a team under the guidance and supervision of the Principal Investigator and the Research Manager to develop and implement a youth outreach strategy to engage youth serving organizations across Canada, and conduct research activities that are vital to the timely execution of the Storytelling about Access and Reproductive Options with Youth Project. The YRA is expected to perform the following tasks:
  • Prepare findings for presentation at local, national and international conferences and meetings, where relevant.
  • Conduct data analysis
  • Conduct and/or support interviews and focus groups with youth, service providers and policy makers
  • Support development of academic manuscripts, community facing reports, and social media campaigns
  • Track and report issues to the Research Manager and contribute to issue resolution
  • Contribute to status reports for the project sponsors and team
  • Lead creative design ‘skills-sharing’ workshops with youth organizations
  • Design and implement a youth outreach strategy that facilitates stakeholder buy-in and participant recruitment
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The YRA is required to conduct the aforementioned research activities to the best of their capabilities and in a timely manner. This is a 4-year phased project with hard dependencies; failure to complete tasks on time may result in schedule delays, budget deficits, and the inability to meet acceptance criteria of deliverables as defined by project sponsors.
The YRA must commit to practicing self-reflexivity and cultural safety, discretion, and good will when working with various stakeholders and collaborating with internal and external agencies. Knowledge and sensitivity to anti-racism and cultural safety is required.
Supervision Received
Most aspects of work will be done independently or with the collaboration of other YRAs and trainees. Training on how to facilitate workshops with youth will be provided. Training on how to conduct qualitative research activities will be provided. A copy of the lab’s orientation guide will be provided during the first week of employment. Ongoing mentorship and workplan preparation will be provided by Dr. Munro and the Research Manager.
Supervision Given
There may be an opportunity to supervise creative design contractors and volunteers.
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a university degree in a relevant discipline or technical program and a minimum four years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Some positions may require a graduate degree.
