Compensation Range


$5,468.83 - $7,878.17 CAD Monthly


The Compensation Range is the span between the minimum and maximum base salary for a position. The midpoint of the range is approximately halfway between the minimum and the maximum and represents an employee that possesses full job knowledge, qualifications and experience for the position. In the normal course, employees will be hired, transferred or promoted between the minimum and midpoint of the salary range for a job.

Job Summary


This position is responsible for facilitating and managing the research activities of the Research Development Unit (RDU) within the UBC Centre for Disease Control (UBC CDC) including project management, grant facilitation, research administration, knowledge translation, communications, day-to-day operations and activities related to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).


Organizational Status


The UBC CDC is the academic arm of the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), the provincial public health agency, and the RDU provides centre-wide research administration. The incumbent will report to the Senior Manager and interact with the research community at the centre, UBC and PHSA. This position is located at BCCDC, but may work remotely as needed.


Work Performed


  • Prepare research performance indicators by conducting literature searches, collecting, analyzing and evaluating data based on eligibility criteria.
  • Perform other related duties.
  • Plan centre-wide and external high profile knowledge translation activities including Grand Rounds lecture series, Research Week, and special events and workshops.
  • Liaise with numerous stakeholders including the centre’s faculty, staff and students, visiting speakers, IT, PHSA, various UBC departments and other external stakeholders to resolve issues and implement new policies.
  • Manage the hiring and appointment of research staff and students, draft job descriptions, interview prospective candidates and provide recommendations on hires.
  • Identify and disseminate funding opportunities, coordinate complex grant application submissions and provide expert advice on funding agency, UBC and PHSA requirements and processes.
  • Develop communications materials, surveys, proposals, annual reports, external review reports and website content.
  • Manage the entire life cycle of strategic projects including designing project scope and objectives, developing work plans and timelines, implementing and rolling out projects across the centre and overseeing project deliverables and closeout activities.
  • Manage the Indigeneity, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (I-EDI) Committee including establishing terms of reference, planning priorities and meeting agendas, leading agenda items and implementing EDI initiatives.
  • Manage research finances including developing financial budgets and forecasts, monitoring the status of grant funds and overseeing research grant expenditures.
  • Responsible for day-to-day operational items as needed.
  • Facilitate research agreements by liaising between researchers, sponsors, University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO) and Office of Research Services (ORS).

Supervision Received


The incumbent will work independently and receive supervision from the Senior Manager as needed.


Supervision Given


The incumbent may supervise, train, provide direction or support to new/junior RDU staff, students and contractors.


Minimum Qualifications


Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Good knowledge of funding landscape and grant administration.
  • Ability to exercise judgement, tact, discretion and diplomacy.
  • Postgraduate degree in a field relevant to infectious disease and/or public health preferred.
  • Training and/or education in equity, diversity and inclusion principles an asset.
  • Skilled in composing documents using clear and concise business English.
  • Work experience in a research and/or health environment required.
  • Proficiency using Workday, Zoom, Skype and Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and OneDrive.
  • Training and/or education in technical writing an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues, and effectively resolve them.
  • Experience using SharePoint 2013 an asset.
  • Experience in basic finance and human resource management.
  • Strong oral communication, interpersonal, planning, organizational and time management skills.
  • Experiential knowledge of UBC and PHSA policies and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects/tasks as well as multiple deadlines.
  • Experience with event planning and developing communications materials.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and high attention to detail.
