Job Description

Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement .

This role is in-person; work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Working for the Department/Faculty


The Varsity Health area, within Athletics – Dean of Students Office, assists in and provides health and performance support to over 500 student-athletes representing 15 unique sports and 24 different University of Alberta teams in the Golden Bears & Pandas Athletics program.


Position Summary


This position, under the direction of the Head Varsity Athletic Therapist and Director of Athletics, is responsible to assist in the planning, coordination and delivery of Varsity Health services for Athletics. The primary purpose of this position is to provide injury response procedures at field venues, and to provide clinical therapy services to varsity student-athletes. This position has several key responsibilities in the prevention, emergency assistance, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of sport based injuries along with the general wellness of student-athletes in Athletics.


Participating as a member of the Varsity Health team, this position will assist in creating a culture that embraces and supports athletes, coaches and teams in the pursuit of excellence and will contribute to the formulation of programs and services that support the holistic needs of interuniversity-athletes.


Duties


  • Provides preventive and therapeutic services within their professional scope-of-practice.
  • Collaborating with other allied health care professionals or clinic staff.
  • Assess injury and design and implement treatment or rehabilitation programs.
  • Onsite first responder coverage of varsity practices and competitions as assigned.
  • Recruitment, training and coordination of students in areas of administrative, clinical and on-field experiences with varsity teams.
  • Teaching, mentorship and evaluation of student therapists.


Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, Education or related field of study.
  • Certified Athletic Therapist CATC or Registered Physiotherapist, eligible to practice in the Province of Alberta; and eligible to maintain professional liability & malpractice insurance.
  • Possess and maintain a valid and current First Responder certificate; current (annual) HCP certification.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Proven problem-solving and critical thinking skills for daily decision making.
  • Ability to demonstrate respect, dignity and integrity in interpersonal relationships and to demonstrate positive personal coping and wellness strategies.
  • Preference is given to candidates who possess a Master's Degree in Kinesiology, Physiotherapy, Education or related field of study.
  • Strong organizational skill set with effective time management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Physical demands include periods of extended standing, computer based worked, lifting and carrying, running on sport surface; in sports facilities.
  • Ability to work independently and to make sound independent judgements.
  • Work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability and desire to continuously learn – knowledge of current theories and issues in the relevant health field.
