Job Description

Position Overview:

A Tax Manager in a public accounting firm plays a critical role in overseeing and managing tax services for clients. This position involves leading a team of tax professionals, providing expert tax advice, ensuring compliance with tax laws, and delivering exceptional client service. The Tax Manager contributes to the overall success of the firm by providing strategic tax planning and optimization solutions.


Tax Planning and Strategy:

  • Advise clients on tax implications related to business transactions, investments, and restructuring.
  • Conduct tax research and analysis to identify relevant tax laws, regulations, and opportunities.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive tax planning strategies to optimize clients' tax positions and minimize tax liabilities.

Tax Compliance and Reporting:

  • Oversee the preparation and review of complex corporate, personal, and partnership tax returns, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Canadian tax laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with clients and tax authorities to address inquiries, audits, and other tax compliance matters.
  • Monitor and ensure timely filing of tax forms, reports, and other tax-related documentation.

Client Relationship Management:

  • Identify opportunities to add value to client engagements and promote client satisfaction.
  • Provide proactive and personalized tax advice, guidance, and solutions to clients.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships, understanding their unique tax needs and goals.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture, promoting knowledge sharing and continuous learning.
  • Assign and review work to ensure high-quality tax services and adherence to deadlines.
  • Lead and manage a team of tax professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

Tax Advisory and Consulting Services:

  • Provide expert tax advice on complex tax matters, such as international taxation, transfer pricing, tax credits, and incentives.
  • Assist clients with tax controversy matters, including negotiating settlements and representing clients before tax authorities.
  • Conduct tax due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and other business transactions.

Research and Industry Knowledge:

  • Conduct tax research and analysis to provide accurate and timely advice to clients.
  • Stay updated on changes in tax laws, regulations, and industry trends.
  • Proactively identify emerging tax issues and develop strategies to address them.



Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to maintaining client confidentiality.
  • Completion of an in-depth tax course (such as the In-Depth Tax Course offered by CPA Canada) would be considered an asset.
  • Proficiency in tax software and tools, as well as Microsoft Excel and other relevant applications.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effectively interacting with clients and team members.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Extensive experience in public accounting with a focus on tax services.
  • Ability to manage multiple engagements, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and motivate a team.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA designation preferred).
  • Proven track record of delivering high-quality tax services and client satisfaction.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian tax laws, regulations, and tax planning strategies.
