Job Description
Position Overview
The Office of Sustainability is currently seeking a Full-time Regular Sustainability Engagement Coordinator.
Reporting to the Manager, Sustainability Partnerships and Engagement, the Coordinator, Sustainability Engagement is responsible for developing and facilitating partnerships that grow sustainability-focused experiential learning across campus. This position primarily collaborates with non-academic units and various student groups, and occasionally with academic units across campus and with community members and organizations, to grow the quantity and quality of sustainability-related experiential learning and student initiatives at the University of Calgary.
This position supports our Campus as Learning Lab initiative, the Sustainable Development Goals Alliance programming, Peer Helper Program, Campus Community Garden, the Green Office and Events Programs, Careers in Sustainability and International Development, Sustainability Ambassadors, and Student Orientation.The Coordinator creates and implements multi-year strategies and plans for sustainability engagement in collaboration with a diversity of campus stakeholders. The Coordinator draws upon best practices in post-secondary secondary education and experiential learning, engagement,and facilitation.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Maintain ongoing collaborative partnerships with the Leadership and Student Engagement Office, Hunter Hub for Entrepreneurial Thinking, Writing Symbols Lodge, Students’ Union, the Graduate Students’ Association, and other non-academic units across campus.
  • Positively engage a diversity of campus and community partners in the development and delivery of sustainability programs. The Office of Sustainability is recognized as a successful facilitator of meaningful and effective partnerships.
  • Ensure the Campus Community Garden is an active, communal space for exploring ecosystem services, resiliency and adaptation, food, water, energy, and social justice.
  • Translate high-level strategies into effective annual programs delivered through the Sustainability Reporting and Engagement team and through campus and community partnerships.
  • Support the Sustainable Development Goals Alliance (SDGA) with an aim to support the growth of SDGA membership, financial sustainability, and effectiveness.
  • Plan and realize high-profile events such as the annual Sustainable Development Goals Summit with the SDGA and the annual Careers in Sustainability and International Development event in collaboration with campus and community partners.
  • Represent UCalgary and the Office of Sustainability at conferences and community events.
  • Coordinate the assessment of volunteer (co-curricular) experiential learning programming in alignment with the Office of Experiential Learning and provide bi-annual quantitative and qualitative reporting of volunteer (co-curricular) engagement outcomes and impact.
  • Support onboarding for sustainability interns annually (funding dependent) who will support program delivery. Coach and mentor student intern(s) on an ongoing basis.
  • Pursue external grants and funding to help sustain student programming, develop effective governance protocols for funding, and manage grants and related reporting requirements.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Undergraduate degree that is relevant to sustainability, environmental science, education, or related field is required.
  • An ability to adapt to shifting priorities and thrive in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • An ability to be conversant across disciplines and to act as a knowledgeable resource to students, faculty, and staff on sustainability is required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, and the ability to engage a diverse audience with confidence in speaking and presenting in public.
  • An ability to apply creativity and systems thinking to designing or adapting programming in partnership with others is an asset.
  • Must possess strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to support multiple projects of various types, and at different stages, with an emphasis on accuracy and meeting milestones and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to nurture positive working relationships with various campus and community partners required.
  • Ability to exercise tact, sound judgment, and exceptional decision-making skills.
  • Minimum three years of professional experience in sustainability-related programs in a post-secondary or similar institution, particularly in engagement and program management involving projects/programs with multiple stakeholders is required.
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring staff or volunteers is an asset.
