Job Description
Position Overview
The Office of Sustainability is currently seeking a Full-time, Regular Sustainability Communications Coordinator.
Reporting to the Manager, Reporting & Communications, the Sustainability Program Coordinator is responsible for supporting engagement of the campus community for the University of Calgary, and by sharing its successes as a post-secondary leader in sustainability.
The Sustainability Program Coordinator supports sustainability initiatives that connect with many units on campus. Therefore, the position requires exceptional interpersonal skills and an ability to productively engage and inform a diverse range of stakeholders on implementation of the University’s Sustainability strategy.
The work of this position is dynamic and may be complex. Stressors include the variation and volume of work, multiple shifting priorities, and numerous, and often simultaneous deadlines. The position demands strong organizational and communication skills to develop relationships and collaborate with students, staff, and faculty members. This position normally works Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. Evening shifts and/or overtime may be required on occasion.
Working under the guidance of the Manager of Reporting and Communications, the incumbent will develop content to engage students, faculty, and staff in sustainability, build awareness to the university’s sustainability goals and progress, and strengthen sustainability literacy and behavioral change.
The sucessful candidate will be tasked with the independent gathering, sourcing, and development of high quality institutional information for ranking and award submissions that maintain University of Calgary’s position as a national and international sustainability leader.
Position Description
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
  • Support the development of engagement materials for events, presentations and reports such as data related graphics and charts to help to educate and engage students, faculty and staff.
  • Mentor, coach and support the professional development of student interns in the Office of Sustainability. Support the attraction and hiring of strong candidates, and support onboarding efforts to ensure student interns can be successful in their roles.
  • Provide self-serve communications templates for Office of sustainability staff.
  • Supports the Manager of Reporting and Communications in the development and delivery of a sustainability communications framework and annual workplan in support of the University’s sustainability strategy.
  • Coordinate updates to the University of Calgary’s Sustainability website and social media channels, ensuring content is accessible, relevant and presented in the most engaging way in alignment with university guidelines and practices.
  • Support the development of specialized tools and other infrastructures associated with experiential learning and sustainability, specifically those that enable students, faculty and staff to staff to be successful, such as building web materials, guidebooks, project protocols and case studies for various stakeholders.
  • Research and identify external sustainability award and granting opportunities, and develop several high quality submissions annually. This involves gathering, assessing and analyzing the requirements of each opportunity, and preparing and presenting the University’s submission in a professional manner.
  • Develop and prepare sustainability education materials, for audiences external to the Office of Sustainability including content for sustainability reports, presentations and stories for the sustainability website in collaboration with communications and other partners.
  • Liaise with the Strategic Communications and Creative team in the production of communications products and ensure Office of Sustainability communications are aligned with institutional policies and brand guidelines.
  • Improve and support data gathering process for various external sustainability ranking programs by conducting research into external best practices, analyzing institutional performance, advising campus contributors on requirements, coordinating content reviews etc.
  • Coordinate and implement community engagement and storytelling activities associated with the University of Calgary’s various sustainability grant commitments.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to nurture positive working relationships with various campus communities required.
  • An ability to adapt to shifting priorities and thrive in a fast paced environment is required. Must be flexible and able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • An interest in and strong understanding of sustainability concepts is required. Related experience is required.
  • Two to three years of sustainability and community engagement, communications and project coordination experience required.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communication skills, and experience with web-based communications an asset.
  • Advanced working knowledge of social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook and possess the experience to gather and analyze social media metrics using Google Analytics.
  • Previous experience working in a public sector organization preferably in the context of post-secondary education sector is an asset.
  • Undergraduate degree that is relevant to sustainability or communications required.
  • Must possess strong organization and time management skills, and have the ability to support multiple concurrent projects.
  • Ability to develop high quality visual and presentation communications documents using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint including design and production software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Working experience in DRUPAL 8 and Marketo to develop email and event campaigns is required.
