Reporting to the Director Corporate Communications, the Specialist, media relations, crisis and disclosure is responsible for managing risk to the company and Suncor’s reputation through media relations, social media, in times of crisis or on complex and sensitive issues. In addition, this individual is aware of disclosure requirements.
This high-pressure, high-risk role requires an individual who can build relationships internally and externally, navigate sometimes highly charged issues, manage multiple requests across a large organization, and act as a Suncor representative on complex issues with consideration of Suncor’s reputation, brand, stakeholder and other impacts.
The Specialist, media relations, crisis and disclosure understand disclosure and legal obligations, regulatory parameters, and the impact of the company’s response on a wide variety of audiences including, but not limited to the general public, investors, government, key stakeholders, ENGOs, employees and unions.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications or related field
  • Bilingual French is an asset but not required
  • 10-15 years’ experience in Communications, including Media and Corporate Communications
Responsibilities:
  • Manage regular media and social media monitoring and reporting for proactive and reactive direction and management of risks to the company and Suncor’s reputation.
  • Accountable for accurate and timely dissemination of materials through newswire service.
  • Serve as a Team Lead during incidents in accordance with the Corporate Communications Response Plan which entails the notification and mobilization of a cross-functional team that includes Investor Relations, Government Relations, Indigenous and Community Relations and ENGO relations as well as engaging with Corporate Emergency Response Management, Corporate Legal as required and the respective business units.
  • Responsible for the development of traditional and social media strategies, implementation of associated projects, monitoring and analysis, and training.
  • Respond to and overseeing inquiries across the large geographic range of operations and on a wide variety of topics.
  • Ensure alignment on messages with Investor Relations for communication materials and any media inquiries.
  • Accountable for review and approval of third-party documents such as news releases, articles and features in publications.
Location and other Key Details:

  • This role is part of an on-call rotation.
  • This is a temporary position for a period of 18 months
  • You will work out of our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Occasional business travel may be required.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
