Position Summary
This is a Hybrid role in Victoria.
Thales is looking for a Ship Maintenance Team Lead is to manage, coordinate and de-conflict the personnel (internal and external) and activities supporting all AJISS related work conducted on the waterfront and ships. Ensuring Service Delivery Team members are assigned their individual responsibilities for each project (work period), the Ship Maintenance Team Lead verifies that all planning, execution and closeout activities are fully completed on time every time. Additionally the Ship Maintenance Team Lead is responsible to ensure all work executed on the Waterfront is done following work site safety plans and procedures. The Ship Maintenance Team Lead is responsible to the Coastal Operations Manager.
Key Areas of Responsibility
The Ship Maintenance Team Lead (Victoria) is responsible to:
  • Lead project planning activities of preparing, organizing and validating to ensure successful transition from project planning, project launch through to project closure;
  • Report status of Operational Defects (OPDEF) that fall within his/her projects;
  • Assess warranty implications and financial claims;
  • Collaborate with the Service Delivery manager and Esquimalt Operations Manager, preparing regular reports as required by the contract;
  • Verify and certify financial claims for payments made to subcontractors.
  • Provide whole ship project management support to the Esquimalt Operations Manager as required to meet the availability standard and to meet the Full Mission Capability under the ISS Contract;
  • Manage the conduct of maintenance and /or Ad-Hoc taskings during designated maintenance work periods within agreed scheduled time frames;
  • Report progress - daily, weekly and at the conclusion of Maintenance activities;
  • Act as the primary point of contact for all stakeholders with respect to the maintenance execution function;
  • Provide the appropriate direction, coaching, support and delegation to individual project team members and the whole team to enable them to achieve the work objectives;
  • Control investigation and rectification of operational defects (OPDEF) within agreed scheduled time frames;
  • Review maintenance systems and support documentation for applicability; and
  • Responsible for coordinating and conducting all required activities prior to the commencement of maintenance execution. This involves subcontractor kick off meetings, authorization of purchase requisitions and issue of purchase orders;
  • Oversee all maintenance execution activities for designated maintenance periods to ensure material readiness objectives for the platforms are being achieved;
  • Execute, monitor and control the project until its completion:
  • Supervising (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) the Thales personnel and subcontractors to achieve agreed outcomes within their delegated authorities and responsibilities;
  • Provide oversight and direction to a team of employees within the Service Delivery department in accordance with the organization’s policies and procedures;
  • Coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities;
  • Leads employees to meet the organization's expectations for productivity, quality, continuous improvement, and goal accomplishment;
  • Works with Human Resources staff to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of employees.
  • People Management:
  • Fosters a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members that allows for cohesiveness, support, and working effectively together enabling each employee and the department to succeed;
  • Work as the Thales liaison during maintenance planning & execution in a way that fosters Project Enterprise values and develops relationships with industry, Department of National Defence, Coastal Fleet Maintenance Facilities, and the Royal Canadian Navy; and
  • Experience interfacing between various internal/external stakeholders within a project;
  • Accreditation as a Certified Practicing Project Manager or equivalent is advantageous
  • Experience within procurement, project management or warehouse environments desirable.
  • Required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at the NATO Secret Level.
  • Requires a positive Controlled Goods assessment as personnel will have direct access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program.
  • Requires direct or indirect access to hardware, software, technology or technical data controlled under the Canadian Export Control List, the ITAR or the EAR.
  • Experience working within or leading In Service Support Projects advantageous.
  • 5 + Years of experience managing projects and teams, preferably in the ship/dockyard and Naval environments.
  • Encourage & Lead development / refinement of program processes across the Project Enterprise as it matures;
  • Strong computer literacy, with proven experience with Microsoft products especially Word, Excel and PowerPoint essential.
  • Comply with and ensure compliance of others to all relevant HS&E legislative requirements, policies, procedures and framework with the intent of preventing or minimizing accidental exposures to self, colleagues, visitors and/or the environment.
  • Undertake other project management duties as assigned.
  • Interact and work with management/employees to promote teamwork, by effectively communicating with all levels of staff via staff meetings, written communications and one-on-one communication.
  • Experience in the supervision of teams undertaking maintenance activities.
  • Experience working within a defence environment with active defence force personnel is desirable.
  • Ensure a collaborative environment exists amongst all internal and external Project Enterprise members, where the focus is on achievement of shared outcomes;
  • Tertiary education in an Engineering or Business/Project Management related field or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • Promote Thales’s Health, Safety and Environmental programs by demonstrating HS&E Leadership in a professional and supportive manner.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Experience with the Defense Resource Management Information System (DRMIS), or comparable document management system is advantageous

  • Ensure issues are resolved at the lowest level and escalated to the Esquimalt Operations Manager as required. Particularly, shortcomings in operational availability and/or safety must be alerted as they happen or are known;
  • Required to access and work in DND facilities and therefore must comply with Federal facility health regulations.
