Job Description

Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Metrolinx is an agency of the Government of Ontario.

Metrolinx's Innovation and Information Technology group supports female team members via "Go Tech Women" an affinity group for women in Information Technology, led by our Chief Information Officer.
This role will provide technical specific development skills and experience to the following product portfolios: Data Engineering; Data Platform Development; Cloud Infrastructure Development; Data Analytics; Data Architecture.
The Data Platform team provides solutions for delivering and deploying Data and Cloud Infrastructure reliably, dynamically, and securely by Infrastructure-as-Code and by developing and engineering relevant tooling, frameworks and products. Cloud Infrastructure includes but is not limited to Private Clouds, Public Clouds, Hybrid Clouds, Multi-cloud, Software Defined Network, Infrastructure-as-Code, Infrastructure-as-a-Service, Platform-as-a-Service and Software-as-a-Service. The capability is critical to enable the at-scale delivery of foundational technologies and infrastructure solutions that underpin other enterprise and customer solutions.
What will I be doing?
  • Lead the technical analysis, program design, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation, with full technical knowledge of all phases of applications systems analysis and programming
  • Implement and maintain Data Platform and Data Reliability Platform
  • Accountable to design, develop and deploy solutions to support developers, operations, and other users e.g. Infrastructure-as-Code, integrations, tooling, frameworks and products for Cloud Infrastructure such as lifecycle management (provisioning, configuration, testing, deployment, maintenance, decommissioning), Continuous Integrations/Continuous Delivery pipelines, dashboards, and reports.
  • Facilitate collaboration with other developers, product owners, product teams and designers to solve interesting and challenging problems through delivery of various analytics solutions.
  • Use the latest concepts in data architecture, and standard Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) processes to determine technical design, develop and test code, and document and implement software solutions at the application level
  • Identify cloud infrastructure issues and perform root cause analysis
  • Provides expertise and advice to stakeholders in integrating Cloud Infrastructure with overall solutions development and help with developing the integrations.
  • Creates prototypes/proof-of-concept to demonstrate or validate designs.
  • Mentor and provide knowledge of best practices to developers and analysts on software development.
  • Design, develop, and maintain CI/CD pipelines and deployment systems (DevOps)
  • Develop, test and support applications as needed, either individually or as part of a team, including the modification of existing programs to conform to system changes, or to make improvements in the existing program
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written/presentation skills
  • Review all programs prior to implementation to verify consistency and conformance with established departmental guidelines, policies and practices, as well as industry standard guidelines
  • Build end-to-end data solutions using Azure, SQL and other tools in the cloud.
  • Be an active participant in the further development of Architecture practice. Drive the adoption of architecture's best practices, architecture processes and tools with the focus on Cloud Infrastructure.
  • Ability to translate business needs to technical specifications, clearly communicate advanced technical topics with non-technical audiences and to work effectively with support teams, user communities and application development groups.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
  • Designing, developing, maintaining and supporting Cloud Infrastructure with high availability and disaster recovery capabilities that meet business continuity requirements
  • Cloud IaaS and PaaS (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud), solution stacks such as OpenStack
  • Integration/low-code platforms such as Azure Synapse
  • Microsoft certified developer Or Agile Certified Professional Or Certified Scrum Product Owner as assets
  • Automating infrastructure with code and automation tools such as Ansible and Terraform
  • Proficiency in developing applications and tools with programming and scripting languages – PowerShell, Bash, SQL, Java, Python, etc.
  • Familiarity with Agile Software Development is an asset
  • Develop and execute database queries and conduct analyses to be used by Operations to identify and measure performance improvement and by management to identify opportunities for meeting and exceeding strategic goals and targets.
  • Structured/unstructured data systems – MS SQL, Oracle SQL, Cloudera, MariaDB, etc.
  • Design, build and deploy Business Intelligence (BI) components of solutions using reporting platforms such as Qlik, Power BI, Power Apps and Tableau
  • Completion of a degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or a related discipline – or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent
  • Designing, developing, maintaining and supporting CI/CD pipelines and DevOps tools such as GitHub, Jira and Jenkins
  • Demonstrated experience in Software development, as a Technical Lead, Senior Software Engineer, Project leader
  • Develop and test Cloud prototypes, proof of concepts, pilots and production builds
  • Create visualizations and reports for requested projects
