Job Description

: Senior Editor

Interested candidates should send a cover letter and resume, along with any relevant portfolio material, to Mike Therien, Deputy Managing Director, Editorial and Operations:[email protected]

Applications will be accepted until May 6, 2023.

The Macdonald-Laurier Institute is the place to be if you want to be at the heart of informed debate over how federal power can best be used to protect and promote the national interests of Canada.

We are seeking a Senior Editor to be an integral part of our Ottawa team. As Senior Editor, you will provide writing, editing and proofreading support for the production of MLI’s myriad publications under the guidance of Deputy Manager Director, Editorial and Operations, while working in conjunction with other staff, the Institute’s Senior Fellows, Policy Program Directors, and the Managing Director.

The right candidate will be creative and industrious, and have the highest standards for the quality of his or her work. He or she will be used to working under tight deadlines, and enjoy the cut and thrust of vigorous debate over national public policy in Canada. The successful candidate must work at our offices in Sandy Hill. Hours are flexible.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage all facets of the day-to-day editorial and writing processes in support of publications, marketing and strategic plans, grant proposals and reports;
  • Edit reports on complex topics to ensure they are compelling and accessible to readers;
  • Participate in the development and conceptualization of research projects and related events;
  • Work with authors, reviewers and editing freelancers during writing and editing stages of research papers, articles and opinion pieces, to ensure deadlines are met and all content meets MLI’s standards for style and accuracy;
  • Develop editorial content for MLI’s blog and magazine.
  • Work with production and design teams to ensure MLI’s work is accessible, understandable and attractively presented;
  • Manage large projects to successful conclusion on time and on budget;

Required qualifications and abilities:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent in a relevant field such as English, Journalism, or Public Policy with eight years editing experience for major publication(s). (We are prepared to look at different combinations of higher degrees and work experience that might be considered equivalent to this requirement)
  • Ability to anticipate the needs of supervisors, and work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Word and Excel;
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a large volume of work and competing demands, delivering a quality product on time and on budget;
  • Bilingualism would be an asset, as would previous experience working within WordPress.
  • Be able to work calmly and professionally under pressure with a wide variety of collaborators, both orally and in writing (in English);
  • The Institute is strictly non-partisan; working for MLI is incompatible with active membership in any political party.
  • Professional, collegial, enthusiastic and respectful;
  • Demonstrate a high level of ownership of tasks, accountability and initiative;
  • Excel at communicating complex ideas clearly and effectively;
  • Understand the unique nature of the think tank world;
  • An ability to recognize and act on the organization’s priorities;

The Macdonald-Laurier Institute offers a pay and benefits package that is competitive with equivalent positions in Ottawa.
