Over the past 35 years, C-FER Technologies has advanced the safety, environmental performance and efficiency of technologies and operations around the world. C-FER’s unique test capabilities are used to evaluate and de-risk novel technologies under the most challenging real-world applications. Our research spans a broad range of projects that include full-scale testing under complex loading and environmental conditions, advanced simulation and modelling, as well as on-site field monitoring services. C-FER supports the Global Energy Transition by utilizing our state-of-the-art Special Environments Lab (SEL) equipment and infrastructure to evaluate materials and products for the growing hydrogen economy and to support emerging technologies in carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS).
Primarily based in C-FER’s Main facility in South Edmonton, the Junior Researcher (Engineer-in-Training) will report to the Drilling and Completions Department Manager and will have a wide range of duties which ultimately focus on the design and analysis of full‑scale tests under combined and complex loading and extreme environmental conditions.
What You’ll Do:
The Junior Researcher will be a key member of a multi-disciplinary Drilling and Completions team which is responsible for applied research, consulting, and testing projects spanning testing of sub-surface oil and gas products to materials evaluation in hazardous environments.
You will:
- Evaluate failures through data analysis.
- Develop test fixtures and prepare specimens to interface to lab equipment such as load frames and test automation platforms.
- Execute test programs based on test plans and procedures.
- Prepare test plans and develop detailed test procedures to evaluate client products and materials according to test specifications.
Who You Are:
- Motivated and goal oriented with a strong work ethic and drive for continuous learning.
- Creative, resourceful and adaptable problem solver.
- Skilled in mechanical test technology, methods and processes. Experience in data acquisition and (automated) post processing methods is considered a plus.
What You Should Bring:
The ideal candidate will have an Engineering Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related science or engineering degree (e.g. Aerospace, Biomedical, Sustainable Energy); a post graduate degree (e.g. Master’s or PhD) would be considered an asset.
Additionally, you should have:
- Familiarity with material and fastener selection;
- Experience in 3D modelling and creating engineering drawings;
- An ability to build long-term relationships with colleagues, clients and other stakeholders;
- Knowledge of and experience working with hand-tools and fasteners;
- A solid understanding of fundamental engineering principles and strong mechanical aptitude;
- Ability to legally work in Canada for C-FER.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills;
- Registration with APEGA (i.e. an EIT seeking to become a PEng). Candidates with a PEng will be considered, and the job title, occupational level, and salary of the position will be commensurate with their experience; and
Complementary Experience:
- Project management.
- Upstream oil and gas (E.g., downhole or completions tools) and/or emerging renewables (e.g. Geothermal, Hydrogen) industry;
- Mechanical/structural design and manufacturing;
- Experimental design and/or testing; and
