Bimbo Canada pursues the goal of creating value by being at the forefront of manufacturing and service delivery innovation in the baking industry through the continued improvement and refinement of its supply chain network. Bimbo Canada serves major grocery chains, retail outlets and food service operations across Canada with a robust offering of both branded and private label products.
Position Summary
The position of R&D Technologist II will appeal to individuals who are passionate about baking, and participating in the creation and execution of new and improved bread products. The individual will need to be self-motivated, team oriented, enjoy a fast-paced environment, dogged in their pursuit of the end goal and capable of bringing creative approaches to trouble shooting and problem resolution. Must also enjoy the 'hands-on' nature of the job that will require involvement in both laboratroy and plant activities. A passion for food science and technology with an ability to use Science and Technology to drive Innovation and meet consumers’ needs will be important.
This position is a 15-month contract
Basic Scope
Conducts Research and product development activities throughout Bimbo Canada. Brings key skills and knowledge to the Baking Business in new product ideas/concepts and troubleshooting by hands-on and or direction. Initiates product and/or processing concepts from idea to final production start-up. Spearheads new technology development and its application into all baked good areas. Develops and implements productivity projects.
Strong communication skills are required to effectively connect with the National Product Development and Marketing Teams. The successful candidate for this position must have the ability to effectively engage with functional leaders.
Position Responsibilities:
- Interfaces with and leverages the supplier community to achieve project goals
- Ensures Regulatory compliance of products by interfacing with Regulatory Affairs
- Maintains project files to ensure collection and transfer of learning and knowledge
- Conducts pilot and plant trials
- Participates in cross functional teams responsible for projects
- Has the ability to provide training and influence through strong presentation skills
- Lead, trains, coaches co-op or intern R & D position.
- Participates in product sensory trials using internal and external panels
- Develops product costs and Bills of Materials
- Other related duties as assigned or required.
- Participates in sensory trials using external or internal panels.
- Travel to other plants in the system or co-manufacturing sites is required
- Conducts competitive reviews to assist in identifying opportunities
- Maintains current knowledge by reading and disseminating academic and trade literature
- Utilizes good project management skills in the conduct of their duties
- Is fully abreast of market food trends and constantly brings new ideas for innovation
- Demonstrates ability to handle multiple projects concurrently
- Develops new products from concept inception to final plant execution
Required Qualifications For Position
- Excellent organizational and communication (written and oral) skills
- Able to taste and evaluate bread products without restrictions
- Strong commitment to and support of Grupo Bimbos (BBU and Bimbo Canada) values, ethics, goals, and objectives
- Willing to travel as required
- Experience working in plant/factory environment and conducting plant trials
- Proven excellent work record with demonstrated high levels of initiative and self-direction
- Excellent project management skills with ability to prioritize multiple activities simultaneously
- Knowledge of the baking process and the function of ingredients
- Comfortable dealing with ambiguity
- Flexibility to work early morning or alternate working hours as required to conduct plant trials.
- Computer skills and proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database, and other software/applications
- Demonstrated strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
- Minimum of 4 years of experience in Research and Development of foods, preferably in the baking industry. Formulating and/or troubleshooting experience is desired
- B.S. degree in Food Sciences, Cereal Science, or in Chemical, or Food/Agricultural/Biological Engineering.
- Must have hands-on experience working in large scale food industry environment. Knowledge of various bakery processes and equipment is a definite asset along with the ability to conduct lab/ bench top baking.
- Completion of the AIB Residence or equivalent Baking certificate or accreditation is desired.
- Prefer 4 plus years of R&D/Quality technical knowledge in Manufacturing/Operations and at least 2 in Baking Technology
- Experience conducting plant trials, engaging with operations team leaders and line operators
- Knowledge of Statistical Process Control, statistical design of experiments, and data collection and analysis
- B.S. degree in Food science and a strong mechanical aptitude. Equivalent work experience in the bakery industry and specific experience within an R&D/Quality environment, developing or troubleshooting products may be considered
- Experience coaching/mentoring/teaching/guiding junior associates, peers, line operators
