Job Description
Headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario, Protection & Control Engineering East Department has been providing testing and engineering services throughout Southern Ontario since 1970.


The Protection & Control Engineering Department is responsible for performing various power system studies, Protection & Control Design & Implementation work, Commissioning and Maintenance on Power System Protection Equipment. The position will be based in Hamilton and the successful candidate will report to the Team Lead, Protection & Control Engineering.


What will you do as a Protection & Control Specialist at Spark Power


  • The primary role of a Protection & Control Specialist is to perform programming, testing and verification of protection & control devices in the field.
  • Report, record, compute and process electrical test information in accordance with accepted standard practices.
  • Maintain or Commission Power distribution equipment including Power Transformers, Circuit Breakers, HV Switches and Instrument Transformers.
  • The successful candidate will require a sound understanding of related electrical principles and practices.
  • Ability and willingness to travel for out of town for commissioning or maintenance projects.
  • Promote quality service to ensure employee, customer and supplier satisfaction.
  • Exercise due diligence in the care and operation of corporate assets.
  • Responsibility not to use or disclose trade secrets, confidential or proprietary information of or concerning Spark Power, affiliates customers or suppliers without the consent of the corporation.
  • Responsible for testing, commission or maintain power distribution equipment.
  • Familiarity or willing to gain familiarity with testing different types of high voltage and low voltage equipment.
  • Perform field testing, verification and programming of various IEDs from manufacturers such as SEL, GE Multilin, GEC Alstom, Siemens, Square D and ABB. For this reason, any prior knowledge and experience with secondary injection testing equipment such as Omicron will be considered an asset.
  • Perform Short Circuit & Coordination Study, Ground Grid Design or Arc Flash Study. Perform site data collection when required.
  • Be familiar with industry-specific codes and Standards (OESC, IEEE, and NETA).
  • Be safety conscious and have the willingness to learn Electrical Lockout/Tag-out procedures and gain Electrical Safety Awareness.
  • This position requires interfacing with clients, owners, consultants and construction crew and therefor strong oral and written communication skill is essential.
  • Create or Modify Single Line and Three Line Drawing using AutoCAD.
  • Carry out such other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Engineering Manager.
  • Read and interpret electrical AC & DC schematics, AC three-line, logic diagrams and SLDs. Inspect, test, operate and troubleshoot AC & DC control and protection wiring schematic.
  • Perform power system studies using EasyPower or ETAP including Load Flow, Harmonics, Short Circuit Analysis, Protective Device Coordination and Arc Flash Studies
  • Responsible for the analysis, decisions and recommendations needed in connection with technical problem-solving.
  • Responsible for working independently under general direction and will progress to carry out non-routine tasks of substantial variety and complexity.
  • Co-ordinate the day to day functions on a job by job basis, such as but not limited to, compliance with all Health and Safety standards and regulations, availability of necessary resources such as human resources, equipment and materials, resolving conflicts, timely and accurate submission of paperwork.

Working Conditions


  • Required to work in an industrial and outdoor substation environment. Services will be performed within Health and Safety standards and regulations.
  • Needed to provide scheduled 'On Call' services on a rotation basis for the intermediate position.
  • May be required to provide emergency services to the company's customers on short notice.

  • Registered or eligible to register with OACETT or PEO
  • 3-year Electrical Engineering Technology diploma with a focus in Power Systems or Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Degree
  • Candidate having Substation SCADA experience, but lacking protection experience will be considered for this position and are encouraged to apply
  • Valid Class G Driver's License
  • CET or technologist with significant protection & control testing experience is encouraged to apply for this position.
