At UBC, we believe that attracting and sustaining a diverse workforce is key to the successful pursuit of excellence in research, innovation, and learning for all faculty, staff and students. Our commitment to employment equity helps achieve inclusion and fairness, brings rich diversity to UBC as a workplace, and creates the necessary conditions for a rewarding career.
Job Summary
The UBC Physical Therapy and Research Clinic is an exciting new initiative in the Department of Physical Therapy. This student-led, fee-for-service Clinic will be owned and operated by the Department of Physical Therapy within the Faculty of Medicine to provide premier physical therapy care grounded in the best available evidence to service populations within the local community.
This hourly, part-time Physical Therapist role for the UBC Physical Therapy and Research Clinic will be responsible for assessing and treating patients and maintaining the full and robust caseload the clinic requires to support student clinical placements. The candidate must demonstrate a strong desire and focus to provide an optimal clinical experience for patients.
Organizational Status
The Department of Physical Therapy provides the only provincial program for the education of entry-to-practice physical therapists. Through rigorous scholarly activity, high standards of instruction and creative opportunities for learning, the Master of Physical Therapy Program provides a strong foundation that supports the current and future practice of the profession. The Department is also a research-intensive unit with award winning faculty conducting state-of-the art healthcare research.
This position will report to the Associate Head of Clinical Education and the Administration Manager of the Department of Physical Therapy.
Work Performed
Responsibilities for the PTRC Physical Therapist (Part-Time) will include:
  • Ensuring the provision of evidence informed high-quality care to clients.
  • Collaborating in relevant quality improvement and clinical research initiatives
  • The daily assessment and treating of clients in the PTRC including assessing clients’ abilities, establishing treatment goals based on diagnoses and implementation of physiotherapy interventions and treatments.
  • Communicate with referring physicians and other health care professionals regarding clients’ needs, as indicated
  • Act in a professional manner at all times, ensuring clients centered care
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Inappropriate judgment could result in adverse effects to the patients and their care, treatment and recovery. Inappropriate patient treatment could result in patients and their families becoming frustrated, angry or seeking compensation. Both could result in damage to the reputation of the PTRC and the Department of Physical Therapy and impact the long-term success of the clinic.
Inattention to paperwork detail (errors on forms, charts) could jeopardize the results of clinical trials and have impacts on billing for clinic affecting its long-term viability.
Supervision Received
This role will be supervised by the Associate Head of Clinical Education. However, they will not be on-site in the clinic when the candidate is working. Thus, the candidate must be fully competent and independent in their abilities to assess and treat patients.
Supervision Given
None.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing education;
  • Interpersonal skills which will foster interprofessional collaboration opportunities
  • A registered physical therapist with a minimum of interim licensure.
  • Excellence in oral and written communication,
  • Current registration with the College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia and eligible for membership with the Physiotherapy Association of British Columbia
